Volleyball Plays at Tulsa and SMU this Weekend

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple volleyball continues its extended road trip with a pair of American Athletic Conference matches this weekend. The Owls will head to Tulsa on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with the Hurricane before playing at SMU on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAY
Temple opened conference play 1-1 at home, but won a pair of thrilling 3-2 matches on the road (UConn/Memphis) to move to 3-1 in The American, 10-4 overall.
LAST TIME OUT: TEMPLE 3, MEMPHIS 2 (AMERICAN)
Facing an 0-2 deficit, Temple rallied for a 3-2 victory on the road at Memphis on Sunday afternoon. The Owls dropped the first two sets, 22-25, 21-25, before winning the final three, 25-17, 25-19, 15-9 for their third-straight victory.
After combining to hit just .145 between the first two sets, Temple's offense came alive, hitting a combined .469 in sets three, four, and five to finish out the comeback.
Temple junior Irem Asci had another top individual performance, as the outside hitter racked up 23 kills and a career-best 22 digs. It was the third-straight 20+ kill performance for the junior. Elsewhere, senior Tyler Davis notched 11 kills, hitting .360, while junior Izzy Rapacz added eight. Junior setter Kyra Coundourides notched a double-double, with 55 assists and 14 digs, adding a career-best seven kills, while junior Dara Peric notched 12 digs.

Temple handed UConn its first loss in American Athletic Conference play, topping the Huskies 25-18, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 19-17 on their home court last Wednesday.
Asci tallied a career-best 28 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, which came in the third set. It was the second-straight 20+ kill performance for the outside hitter, who also tallied five digs and three aces. Rapacz tied her career high with 18 winners, also adding 16 digs for her fifth career double-double. Sophomore Mia Heirakuji tied the best defensive output of her career with a match-high 18 digs, while Coundourides also tied a career-high, finishing the night with 58 assists.
ASCI AGAIN NAMED TO AMERICAN WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Temple junior Irem Asci was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the period ending October 2. The outside hitter averaged a double-double of 25.5 kills and 13.5 digs in 3-2 wins over UConn and Memphis.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
The Owls' offense is led by Asci, who has brought her season average up to 4.45 kills per set, a number that ranks her 20th in the nation and second in the conference. The junior also adds 2.91 digs per set to her arsenal, while landing second on the Owls with 19 aces. Rapacz provides more fire-power from the outside, racking up 3.00 kills per set, with Kirsten Overton (1.74 kills/set) and Iva Deak (1.56 kills/set) attacking from the middle. Davis has come on strong since the start of conference play, and now averaged 1.79 kills per set.
Coundourides is Temple's primary setter, averaging 10.70 assists per set overall, 11.05 in conference play. The junior transfer leads the Owls with 21 aces on the season, while also averaging 2.46 digs per set. Hannah Vandegrift has also seen action in several rotations, adding 3.88 assists and 1.31 digs per set.
Defensively, Heirakuji leads the Owls with 3.00 digs per set. At the net, Overton tops the team with 58 blocks, seven solo, while Rapacz (56) and Deak (51) have helped Temple to a 2.17 blocks per set average, second in The American.
SCOUTING TULSA
Tulsa split both weeks of the conference season, standing at 2-2, but the Hurricane have compiled a 13-3 overall record, top in The American.
Tulsa leads the conference with 18.46 digs per set, and also stands at the top in aces (93), and attacks per set (38.72). Their offense is led by Erica Bohannon's 3.62 kills per set. Rebecca Reeve plays all-around to the tune of 2.92 kills and 2.85 digs per set, while Trinity Alualu averages 2.2 kills per frame. Tulsa runs a 6-2 offense with Ashton Anderson (6.06 assists/set) and Mariah Pardo (4.52 assists/set) handling setting duties.
Brooke Berryhill captains the defense with 5.18 digs per set, a number that ranks her second in The American. Tulsa has five players with 25 or more blocks, led by Rachel Moore's 57 stuffs. On the serving line, Reeve, Alualu, and Moore all have 15 or more aces on the season.

Katie Hegarty leads the Mustangs' offense with 3.76 kills per set, while Lauren Mills (2.43 kills/set), Janelle Giordano (2.05 kills/set), and Kristen Stehling (2.14 kills/set) all aid the SMU attack. Kendall Patterson handles setting duties, averaging 10.59 assists per frame, while also leading the team with 14 aces.
Defensively, Morgan Heise leads the Mustangs and the conference with 5.31 digs per set, while Mills (3.02 digs/set) and Patterson (2.45 digs/set) are also solid back-row players.
