Men's Basketball Hosts New Hampshire in Preseason NIT Contest Monday Night
11.13.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - The first of Temple's four games in the NIT Season Tip-Off has the Owls hosting New Hampshire (1-0) on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. (ESPN3 / 1210 AM WPHT). Temple (1-0) will also host Manhattan on Nov. 20 before traveling to Brooklyn to play the final two contests over Thanksgiving at Barclays Center.
Temple is coming off a high-scoring, 97-92 win in its season opener against Philadelphia Big 5 rival La Salle on Nov. 11. Six Owls scored in double figures, with three earning career highs in points led by redshirt senior Daniel Dingle's career and team-high 21 points. Junior Obi Enechionyia and sophomore Ernest Aflakpui both recorded double-doubles, the second for Enechionyia and first for Aflakpui.
Sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. scored a career-high 14 points including seven in the overtime period to help the Owls seal the victory. Temple is now 95-26 all-time in season openers. The Owls' 97 points in the La Salle win were their most since Dec. 21, 2013 when they won 101-65 at LIU Brooklyn.
The Owls are coming off a 21-12 season that saw them win the American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship, and make an NCAA Tournament appearance for the seventh time in head coach Fran Dunphy's 10 seasons. Tenth-seeded Temple, who earned an at-large berth, narrowly missed advancing to the second round after a 72-70 overtime loss to seventh-seeded Iowa. After Dunphy's Owls were picked to finish sixth in the American, but instead won the league's regular season with a record of 14-4, he was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for a second straight season.
New Hampshire began its season with an 85-60 win over Division III opponent Lesley University. The Wildcats got a triple-double from senior guard Jaleen Smith, who added 10 assists and 10 rebounds to a game-high 20 points. UNH finished at 20-13 overall in 2015-16, marking the program's first-ever 20-win season. The Wildcats return three of five starters from that team, including junior Tanner Leissner who was named to the America East Preseason All-Conference team. Smith was an America East Second Team honoree in his junior year.
The Wildcats are coached by Bill Herrion, who is in his 12th year at the helm after previously serving as the head coach at Drexel for nine seasons.Â
While Temple and New Hampshire are meeting for the first time in program history, both head coaches have played one game against the other team. Dunphy earned a 93-55 victory against the Wildcats on Dec. 30, 1991 as head coach at Penn, while Herrion suffered a 61-39 loss to Temple in the NCAA First Round on March 18, 1994 as head coach at Drexel.
