Hot-Shooting Men's Basketball Takes Down Manhattan, 88-67

11.20.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Behind a career-high 22 points from Daniel Dingle among a number of strong performances, Temple men's basketball cruised to an 88-67 win over visiting Manhattan on Sunday afternoon in an NIT Season Tip-Off contest. The Owls (2-2) began to dominate the game down the stretch of the first half, and never let up the rest of the way.

Temple shot 60 percent in a 49-point second half. Sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. scored 15 of his 17 points in the latter period, hitting 7-of-11 from the the field overall and dishing a game-high five assists. Junior Obi Enechionyia also finished with 17 points including 3-of-5 three-pointers, and led the Owls with seven rebounds.

Coming off the bench for a season-high 14 points was freshman Quinton Rose who hit all five of his attempts from the floor while also recording three assists, three blocks and two steals.

Temple forced 22 Manhattan turnovers, the most for an opponent of the Owls since a win against La Salle on March 11, 2011. Temple finished with a 26-16 advantage in points off turnovers and recorded a season best 10 steals.

Manhattan's Xavier Turner had an impressive outing for the Jaspers despite the loss, hitting 9-of-14 from the field for a game-high 28 points.

After a sluggish start for both teams had the game tied 15-15 after almost 12 minutes of action, the Owls cruised down the stretch. Temple outscored Manhattan 24-5 over the last eight minute of the half, led by 13 points from Dingle.

Over that closing stretch, the Owls hit 10-of-13 from the field while forcing eight turnovers on the Jaspers. For the half, Temple led 15-3 in points off turnovers and Dingle led all scorers with 15 points of his own.

Enechionyia hit his second three-pointer just 10 seconds into the second half to give the Owls their first 20-point lead. The Jaspers cut it to 17 points after three minutes, Rose followed back-to-back layups with a steal and a fastbreak dunk to put Temple up 54-31 with 15 minutes left.

The buckets by Rose were part of a 13-2 run that gave Temple a lead of 28 points, 61-33 at the 12-minute mark. Starting near the eight-minute mark, an 8-0 run highlighted by five points by Enechionyia put the margin at a game-high 31 points, 76-45. Temple matched that lead one more time with 4:47 remaining.

During halftime, the first four members of the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor were recognized at a special ceremony. While two of the four inductees, 1938 graduates Mike "Meyer" Bloom and Don Shields, are no longer with us, the other two returned to North Broad Street for the ceremony. Juan "Pepe" Sanchez ('00) and Terence Stansbury ('84) were the first to see their names permanently displayed in the Ring of Honor that now adorns the wall above the upper bowl of the Liacouras Center.

Next up for the Owls are their final two games of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Brooklyn's Barclays Center over Thanksgiving. First up is a 12:30 p.m. contest against Florida State on Thursday, Nov. 24 (ESPN2/U / 1210 AM WPHT).
