Comeback Attempt Falls Short at the Buzzer for Men's Basketball Against GW

12.7.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - A furious comeback attempt fell just short at the buzzer as Temple men's basketball had its five-game win streak snapped in a 66-63 loss to visiting George Washington (6-4) on Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center. The Owls (6-3) were down by 15 before tying the game with 38 seconds left, but a final three-point attempt bounced off the rim as time expired.

Senior Daniel Dingle scored a team-high 14 points, making 4-of-8 three pointers before barely missing his ninth attempt at the end of the game. Dingle hit the third and fourth of those treys to give the game its first tie of the second half with a minute and a half remaining.

Also scoring in double figures for Temple were junior Obi Enechionyia (12 points), freshman Alani Moore II (11 points) and senior Josh Brown (10 points). Brown hit 4-of-5 from the field including 2-of-3 from long range in his first double-digit outing since returning from injury two games ago.

Dingle dished a career- and game-high seven assists, while sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. added six assists without committing a turnover.

Tyler Cavanaugh led all scorers with 20 points for GW, and scored the winning three-point shot with eight seconds left.

GW took the lead in the third minute of the game, and the best Temple could do was tie the score on two occasions in the first half. The first of those ties came at the end of a 7-0 run with 11:30 remaining at 12-12, and a Mark Williams jumper later tied the game at 14 near the midway point of the half.

Only Enechionyia and Brown scored the rest of the way, combining for 11 points. The Colonials built their lead to as many as eight points in the final minute, but Brown scored the last bucket to put Temple within six, 31-25 at the break.

Despite a 21-10 advantage for GW on the glass in the first period, second-chance points were just 2-2 at halftime. Despite struggling offensively, the Owls did take advantage of 10 GW turnovers, finishing the half with a 10-3 edge in points off turnovers. Enechionyia led all scorers with 10 points at the break.

With a 13-2 run early in the second half, GW took its largest lead of 15 points, 46-31 at 14:13. The Colonials matched that lead twice more, the second time with 10:46 remaining before Temple began to chip away.

The Owls scored seven in a row to make it an eight-point game with 8:42 left, and were able to get within seven on a Dingle three-pointer at 7:34. After GW went back up by double digits, the Owls got back-to-back buckets from Alston and Brown to once again cut the margin to seven, 59-52 with 5:29 remaining.

Neither team scored for almost two minutes until GW hit a pair of free throws at 3:41. Brown drained his second trey in a three-minute span to get Temple within two possessions, 61-55 with 2:45 to go. Arnaldo Toro missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the line for the Colonials, and Dingle took over from there.

He sank his third and fourth three-pointers of the contest within 40 seconds of each other to tie the game at 61 with a minute and a half left. Cavanaugh hit a pair of free throws with a minute left, but Alston answered with a jumper to make it 63-63 with 38 seconds to go.

Cavanaugh's winning three-pointer was a heartbreaker for Temple, as the Owls kept GW from shooting for the entire possession. The ball left Cavanaugh's hands just as time expired on the shot clock, and put Temple down by three with eight seconds left. Brown got the ball in Dingle's hands for the final shot, but overtime was not meant to be.

Temple will play next in the Hoophall Miami Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 10, facing DePaul at 11:30 a.m. (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT).
