PHILADELPHIA (Penn) - In its final dual meets of the 2015-16 season, Temple fencing went 2-1 at the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday. The 10th-ranked Owls beat Cornell 15-12, and won 20-7 against FDU. Their only loss was by a single point, 14-13 to #5 Northwestern. Temple finishes the dual meet season with an overall record of 24-14.
The sabre squad had a strong couple matches, going 9-0 against FDU and 8-1 against Cornell before narrowly losing 5-4 against Northwestern. Temple's foil squad registered a win against the fifth-ranked Wildcats, 5-4.
Sophomore Safa Ibrahim went an impressive 3-0 against a strong lineup of Northwestern epee fencers, and finished the day at 6-1 overall. Seniors Fatima Largaespada (foil) and Petra Khan (sabre) along with junior Miranda Litzinger (foil) all went 2-1 against Northwestern.
Junior Alexandra Keft recorded a perfect 3-0 mark for epee against FDU, as did senior Olivia Wynn for the sabre squad. Junior Victoria Suber and freshman Blessing Olaode went 2-0 against FDU for sabre. Olaode also had a perfect match against Cornell, going 3-0, while senior Gloria Aguilar put up a 2-0 mark against Cornell. Both Olaode and Wynn went undefeated for the meet overall.
"We showed how strong we can be," said Temple assistant coach Josh Herring, who noted in particular the Northwestern match that came down to the final bout. "We were very happy with the enthusiasm of the team overall, especially after back-to-back days of competition. Now we'll focus on getting ready for the postseason, starting with the NIWFA Championships where we hope to continue our strong tradition of success."
Next up for Temple is the NIWFA Championships next Saturday, Feb. 27, with the Owls looking to take their 20th straight team title.
