Track & Field Set for 122nd Running of the Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – Members of Temple's track and field team are set to compete at the 122nd annual Penn Relays beginning tomorrow, April 27. Owls will be featured in multiple events on Friday and Saturday, looking to advance through the relay heats into championship races. Crystal Jones will be the first Owl to compete, participating in the high jump and 400-meter hurdles on Thursday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Overall, Temple will be represented in six individual and seven relay events across the three days of competition. Last season at the Penn Relays, Temple finished the three-day event with three new school records and a first-place championship relay team. The 4x400-meter relay advanced to Saturday's championship race and placed first in the College Women's 4x400-meter ECAC event with a time of 3:42.75. This year's 4x400-meter relay will run in the trial heat on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
Blanca Fernandez returned with a new school record following the 2015 Penn Relays, running a time of 4:39.88 in the Olympic Development Women's Mile to place fourth overall and rank as the top collegiate finisher in the event. Fernandez, just named Temple University's Female Athletic Performer of the Year, will be competing in the event for a second year on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. She will also be participating in the Spring Medley Relay, running on Friday, with teammates Jimmia McCluskey, Bionca St. Fleur and Kenya Gaston.
The Owls will also have teams running in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x800, 4x100 Shuttle Hurdles, and distance medley relays. As for individual events, St. Fleur and McCluskey will be featured in the long jump, Sydnee Jacques and Simone Chapman will take the triple jump, and Sylvia Wilson will compete in the 100-meter hurdles.
