Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to No. 2 Syracuse in Conference Cup Tournament
8.26.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA (Saint Joseph's) - The defending national champions gave Temple field hockey a strong challenge in the opening game of the 2016 season, and the Owls fell 8-0 to the No. 2 Syracuse Orange in the first game of the Conference Cup Tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's.
Temple gave up four goals in each half, but got a solid debut performance from freshman Maddie Lilliock who made nine saves overall.
"It's refreshing to see a group of women compete to the end," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman on her team's effort. "We knew today was going to be a challenging game for us, but that's going to be the philosophy of this program. We're not going to shy away from strong competition. We're going to capitalize on the opportunities to have it and learn from it, and we were able to do that today."
Emma Lamison and Lies Leagerweij scored two goals apiece for the Orange, who got off 22 total shots to the Owls' three.
Redshirt junior Sarah Keer was a strong presence on the front line for Temple, taking two shots with one on goal. Late in the second half, Keer broke free to earn one of the Owls' best scoring chances, but her shot went just wide of the cage.
Temple's defense held the Orange scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the contest, and the Owls spent a number of minutes away from their defensive end as well.
"I thought Syracuse did a good job in coming out, but I also thought we did a good job controlling the play early in the game," said Freeman. "We were able to get into their defensive end quite often, but unfortunately weren't able to capitalize."
When Syracuse did score, it did so twice in quick succession. By halftime, the Orange led 4-0. They added three more in the first 15 minutes of the second half, and then scored their final goal on a penalty stroke with less than four minutes remaining.
"We'll take the lessons that we learned today and apply them in our game against Saint Joseph's on Sunday and beyond," said Freeman. "So there's a lot of pluses to take out of this, especially the depth of our bench. I'm really pleased to see that regardless of the score, we were able to compete until the end. That's a testament to the mindset and the energy and the desire of this team to get better."
The Owls return to action on Sunday, Aug. 28, playing host Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m.
