Grand Opening of Temple's Howarth Field Set For This Friday
8.30.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - On Friday, Sept. 2, Temple field hockey will usher in a new era at the grand opening of Howarth Field. The Owls will face No. 18 Penn State at 6 p.m., and a large number of alumnae are expected to attend.
The name Howarth Field for the new field hockey and lacrosse stadium is in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa Howarth and her husband, Greg. Howarth Field is part of the new Temple Sports Complex south of campus at Broad St. and Girard Ave.
The new field includes bleacher seating, a state-of-the-art watering system, video scoreboard, a press box and new locker room facilities. The donors hope their gift will position Howarth Field as a first-class venue nationally. Other sports to be housed at the complex include men's and women's soccer and women's track and field.
"We hope our giving inspires others to give, whether to field hockey, athletics, or to some other passion they hold," said Cherifa Howarth. "Temple is an extraordinary and diverse place. We hope others will be inspired to express and support their passions as we have supported ours."
Cherifa Howarth is a frequent fixture on the sidelines of Temple field hockey, and both Howarths will be recognized prior to Friday's game as part of the grand opening celebrations being run by the Temple Owl Club.
"We're so fortunate to have Howarth Field," said second-year Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "We're extremely grateful to the Howarths and to all the alumni and parents that have made so many contributions, and to the administration that have supported us from the get-go on this whole project. For us to come out here and see this brand new Astroturf 12 and this whole new facility, and the locker room, it's really special. It definitely empowers the women on the team, and hopefully also those that aspire to be on the team and those that played before us. We're just so thankful for it."
Howarth Field is just the second permanent home in program history for Temple field hockey and lacrosse. Both teams formerly played at Geasey Field on the corner of 15th and Norris Streets. The land that includes Geasey Field was made into recreational fields in 1956, and the teams have played there ever since.
