PHILADELPHIA - The inaugural game at Howarth Field did not go Temple field hockey's way, as the Owls lost 8-1 to No. 18 Penn State (3-0) on Friday night at the Temple Sports Complex. The Nittany Lions, looking more like a top 10 team, were the second ranked team Temple (0-3) has faced in its first three games.

The Lions' Brooke Birosik scored the game's first goal and went on to total four overall, while Moira Putsch added two for Penn State along with an assist.

Temple held strong for much of the first half, allowing three spread-out Penn State goals and adding one of its own before halftime. Sophomore Jessika Daniels took a cross ball from redshirt junior Sarah Keer, and found an open slot to get the Owls on the board in the 28th minute.

Penn State was awarded eight penalty corners in each half for 16 total, compared to just one in each half for the Owls. Temple allowed just one goal on a direct corner, but the Lions generated much of their offense off the set pieces.

After a 3-1 score at halftime, Penn State came on strong with five second-half goals. Putsch got the Lions going just six minutes into the half, and Birosik later scored three goals within a four-minute span in the final 10 minutes of the game. With less than three minutes left, the Lions added a final goal by Gini Bramley.

Freshman Maddie Lilliock made eight saves for the Owls, who also got one defensive save apiece from senior Ali Meszaros and freshman Becky Gerhart. Jenny Rizzo finished with three saves for Penn State.

Temple will look for its first win when the Owls are back at home on Sunday, Sept. 4, taking on city rival La Salle at noon.
