Field Hockey Drops BIG EAST Road Game at No. 3 UConn

9.23.16 | Field Hockey

STORRS, Conn. - In its first BIG EAST road game of the season, Temple field hockey came up against a tough challenge in No. 3 UConn and fell 6-0 to the Huskies on Friday afternoon. Led by Charlotte Veitner with a hat trick in the game, the Huskies (8-0, 2-0) scored three goals in each half.

Freshman Maddie Lilliock tied her season high with 11 saves in goal for the Owls (1-8, 0-2), but Temple was only able to tally two shots on goal for the afternoon. UConn came up with 17 shots on goal and earned eight penalty corners compared to just one for Temple.

The Huskies got on the board in fifth minute of the game with Veitner's first goal. Two minutes later, the Owls' Jessika Daniels had their best opportunity of the first half, but her shot was stopped by UConn goalkeeper Nina Klein.

Temple kept the Huskies to just the one goal until after the midway point of the first half. Veitner scored her second goal in the 19th minute on an assist from Amelia Iacobucci, and the Huskies' Svea Boker put in their third goal in the 26th minute.

Two and a half minutes into the second half, Casey Umstead scored on a penalty stroke to give UConn a 4-0 lead. The Huskies made it 5-0 on a breakaway a couple minutes later when Veitner completed the hat trick thanks to an assist from Amanda Collins.

In the 58th minute, UConn's Barbara Hoogen redirected a shot from Boker for the Huskies' final goal of the game.

Temple had the ball in its offensive half more often in the second period, but UConn's defense held the Owls out of the circle on most of their possessions. Temple took its first corner after time expired in the game, but the shot by Hattie Kuhns was saved by a defender for the Huskies.

Next up for Temple is a non-conference contest at Sacred Heart, which will be played on Yale University's home field on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
