Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Head to the Annual Paul Short Run on Saturday

9.30.16 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country

PHILADELPHIA – A deep and high caliber field will await Temple men's and women's cross country when the Owls toe the starting line at the 43rd annual Paul Short Run on Saturday, Oct.1. The Owls will be among about 450 colleges and high schools at the highly anticipated meet, hosted by Lehigh University.

Last season, Blanca Fernandez won the Women's Gold 6K race for Temple.

"Paul Short is a big competition," says head coach James Snyder. "Last year Blanca was fortunate enough to win the women's race. Our number two girl, Katie Pinson, placed around 80th. This season, we have three top runners in Katie Leisher, Grace Moore, and Millie Howard that all have the potential to finish in the top 50. I have spoken to Leisher specifically about aiming for the top 20 in Saturday's race. I believe that we will run better than we have ever run at the Paul Short this year."

At the Rider Invitational on Sept. 16, men's cross country's Marc Steinsberger took first place out of a field of 129 participants. The cross country staff foresees him remaining at the front of the line on Saturday.

"Marc has a shot at being in the top 10 on Saturday," Snyder predicts. "He's done a really good job in training and is still in the process of accumulating fitness, but I feel that he will be in a great spot on Saturday in terms of his physicality. Johnathan Condly, Kevin Lapsansky and Zach Sieger have all set goals to finish under 25 minutes, which if they can pull off will place them in the top 60. I doubt that we will finish this race with anyone running longer than 25:30 or 25:40"

At the 2015 Paul Short Run, Temple men's cross country finished 16th overall while the women finished 29th. As both the men's and women's teams are ranked in the top 15 in the Mid-Atlantic region (14th and 15th respectively), the fourth-year coach expects better scores in 2016.

Lehigh University hosts the Paul Short Run in honor of long-time Lehigh cross country fan and Lehigh Athletics Hall-of-Famer, Paul Short. The first Paul Short meet was in 1969, hosting just male athletes. Today, the event has grown tremendously, featuring six college races, six high school races, and two open meets for men and women.

"This is a race that we participate in every year," Snyder explains. "It is a very talented field and just happens to be about an hour away from home for us. Saturday, we will get the chance to run in front of our friends, family, and former teammates. Even my high school cross country coach will be there."

The Men's Gold 8K race begins at 11:00 a.m. and the Women's Gold 6K will follow at 11:45 a.m.
