Men’s Basketball to Play Jefferson Rams in Charity Exhibition
10.17.17 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's basketball team announced the addition of an exhibition game against Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) to be held at the Liacouras Center Thursday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. All ticket sales from this game will be donated to One America Appeal to benefit those impacted by the recent hurricanes that hit Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Temple requested a waiver from the NCAA to play this additional contest for charity and it was approved.
"When the opportunity presented itself to play an exhibition game to raise money for the people suffering from the recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, we knew right away that we needed to be a part of it," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "I called my good friend, Herb Magee, one of the most respected men in the business, and he felt the same way. This gives our fans a rare opportunity to see our programs compete while also helping out those in need."
"It is a tremendous opportunity for our team," said Jefferson head coach Herb Magee. "Coach Dunphy and I have been friends for a long time. We talked about playing one day and that time is now. We're looking forward to it, especially as we begin our new era as the Jefferson Rams. Being able to provide aid to those impacted by the recent natural disasters makes this game that much more special."
Temple owns an 8-3 all-time record in the series with Jefferson. The last time the teams competed on the hardwood was Jan. 17, 1976 when the then Philadelphia Textile Rams, coached by Magee, defeated the Owls, coached by Don Casey, 70-58, at the Palestra.
Magee, who has won 1,053 games in his 50 years at the helm, owns a 3-2 record against Temple. The Naismith Hall of Fame coach also defeated the Cherry and White on Feb. 3, 1975 (69-59) and Jan. 6, 1973 (58-52). That last contest was also held at the Palestra with the Owls coached by Hall of Famer Harry Litwack. Temple's last win in the series was the last game of the 1973-74 season, a 63-53 win at the Palestra.
Like so many colleges and universities, Temple University students, families and staff have been impacted by the devastation of the three hurricanes with 19 student-athletes coming from the three areas. This exhibition game with Jefferson is the latest outreach by Temple Athletics following the devastating hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.
The Temple Athletic Department's Office of Compliance and Student-Athlete Affairs coordinated a fundraising drive that is still collecting nonperishable items for the victims of the hurricanes. Similarly, the Owls' men's and women's basketball teams sent sneakers, shirts, and other apparel to be given to those who were affected. In addition, at all home sporting events, the Temple Athletic Department has included both a public address announcement and video board message encouraging fans to donate money directly (via a text message campaign) to the American Red Cross in an effort to support hurricane victims.
Additionally, there will be tables on the concourse of the Liacouras Center at both entrances with donation jars. Prior to and throughout the game, fans will be encouraged to visit these locations to donate additional dollars to One America Appeal.
Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 10:00 a.m. Fans can purchase a reserved ticket for the event for $10; Temple and Jeffferson student tickets are free with valid student IDs.

About One American Appeal
The One America Appeal is a joint appeal that was originally launched by all five living former American Presidents to encourage their fellow citizens to support recovery efforts from Hurricane Harvey — which inundated the Texas Gulf Coast with unprecedented flooding. This special appeal has been expanded to include areas most affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. All donations will go to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, Hurricane Irma in Florida, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Texas, monies will go to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund focusing on the greater Houston region, and the Rebuild Texas Fund assisting communities across the state. In Florida, monies will go to the Florida Disaster Fund, which is the state's official private fund to assist the state's communities as they respond to and recover from destructive storms. In the Caribbean, donations will be distributed to Unidos Por Puerto Rico launched by the office of First Lady Beatriz Rosselló together with private sector coalition; and the Fund for the Virgin Islands which was established 25 years ago by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands for relief efforts.
