PHILADELPHIA - Coming home a champion is quite the feeling for Temple field hockey assistant coach Katie Gerzabek, who won a gold medal at the women's Indoor Pan American Cup (IPAC) with the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team last week in Guyana. The team topped International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hero World Ranked No. 13 Argentina by a final score of 2-1 on Oct. 21, capping an undefeated 7-0 performance at the IPAC.
The victory also gives the Indoor USWNT a bid to the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup this coming February in Berlin, Germany. It is the team's first ever bid to the Indoor World Cup.
"It's hard to put into words the feeling that I have knowing our USA Indoor Team won the gold medal and earned ourselves a bid to the 2018 Indoor World Cup," said Gerzabek. "I could not be any prouder to be a part of this team that worked so hard not only throughout the tournament, but in the weeks leading up to help prepare us for success. We stayed present throughout the week and showed our grit and poise during each game we competed in. This medal represents a complete team effort and I am looking forward to getting back to training with the team in hopes of earning a spot on the Indoor World Cup squad."
Gerzabek was the one to get the USWNT on the scoreboard in the 31st minute of the gold-medal game. Ali Campbell scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke attempt late in the second half.
With support in the crowd by U.S. Ambassador, Perry Holloway, and a large contingent from the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown, the Indoor USWNT played with poise and determination while achieving new historical feats.
"We couldn't be prouder of Katie and the entire US Indoor team for taking home the gold," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "The vigor they played with, the grit they displayed and the commanding presence they consistently showed on the court is a testament to the desire they had to win. A huge congrats to each of the US team members, specifically our Katie...you couldn't have represented the USA any better!"
