Rachael Mueller Named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
8.17.17 | Field Hockey
NEW YORK - Temple senior Rachael Mueller was one of 11 named to the 2017 Preseason All-BIG EAST Field Hockey Team in a vote by the league's eight head coaches. Mueller, a 2016 BIG EAST Second Team selection, was the Owls' leading scorer last year.
Connecticut, 16-time league champion, was voted as the overwhelming favorite in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Huskies earned all seven possible first-place votes and swept both major awards – BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Charlotte Veitner and Defensive Player of the Year Casey Umstead. The BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, major awards and all-conference selections are based on ballots cast by the eight head coaches, who cannot vote for their own teams or student-athletes.
Following Connecticut's 49 points in the poll were Liberty with 41 points and one first-place vote. Old Dominion (35 points) and Providence (33 points) rounded out the top four. Temple followed in fifth with 25 points, Quinnipiac in sixth with 19, Villanova in seventh with 15 and Georgetown rounded out the preseason polls with seven points.
Mueller played in all 19 games as a junior, starting in 17, and scored a team-best 10 goals. Her total included three game-winning goals to tie for fifth among all players in the conference while her 0.53 goals per game also ranked fifth. Mueller scored twice including the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25. She also scored the game-winning goal in the Owls' 2-1 overtime upset of #13 Old Dominion on Oct. 7.
Temple posted a 7-12 overall record in 2016, and a 3-4 mark in the BIG EAST.Â
The field hockey season gets underway on Aug. 25 when seven of the league's eight teams open their 2017 campaign, including Temple with a home matchup against city rival Saint Joseph's at 6 p.m.
Conference play begins on Sept. 15 with three BIG EAST matchups taking place.
The BIG EAST Championship is slated for Nov. 3 and 5 at Providence's Lennon Family Field with the top four seeds qualifying. The semifinals and finals will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
