Seniors and Award Winners Honored at Annual Field Hockey Banquet
1.23.18 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Five seniors were recognized and a number of others were honored with special awards at Temple field hockey's annual banquet, held Saturday, Jan. 20 at Edberg-Olson Hall. Head coach Marybeth Freeman, her coaching staff and many support staff were on hand as well as families of the student-athletes.
"It was a great night celebrating our 2017 TUFH team," said Freeman, "recognizing special award winners and honoring our departing seniors. A special THANK YOU goes out to the parents for their continued support of their daughters and our Temple field hockey program."
Based on team voting, there were co-Offensive Player of the Year awards given out. Senior Rachael Mueller and sophomore Kathryn Edgar were each chosen by their teammates to receive the honor. Mueller, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, finished the season with six goals, four assists, a team-leading 16 points and two game-winning goals. Edgar had two goals, with her five assists and 21 shots allowing her teammates to capitalize on rebounds and scoring opportunities.
Junior Nellie Doyle was voted as the Defensive Player of the Year. Doyle frequently found herself in position to change the momentum of the game with one interception, one tackle or with her immediate pressure on the ball. She played the third-most minutes on the team, and contributed three defensive saves on the year. Doyle was a two-time winner at the banquet, also being named Most Improved.
The Anne Volp Award is for an upperclassman who has demonstrated success in the classroom and on the field. With a fall GPA of 3.92, an overall cumulative GPA of a 3.74 and quantitatively the highest performing student within the program, junior Chloe Johnson was the recipient.
Like Doyle, Johnson was a double award-winner and also earned the 3-Touch Hockey Award. 3 Touch Hockey is a philosophy instilled within the program combining athletics, academics, and community into a student-athlete's life on a daily basis. In addition to her 3.92 semester GPA, Johnson is the president of the student-run SASS (Safe Space) program, and was a commanding presence in the goal.
The Randy Lokey Memorial Award, in honor of Randy Lokey (father of Temple Field Hockey alum Ali Lokey), goes to the biggest fan of the program. This individual makes their presence known and their energy is contagious. A constant in the stands whose enthusiasm for the program runs deep. The 2017 Randy Lokey Memorial Award winner was Terri Batze (mother of Dani Batze).
The banquet was the last for five seniors - Mueller, Maiyah Brown, Sarah Keer, Ashley Kucera and Hattie Kuhns, who were all given framed jerseys to commemorate their careers as Owls.
