Temple Hosts Wichita State for "White Out" Game Thursday; Honors 1987-88 Elite Eight Team

PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball is looking for a "White Out" this week as the Owls (11-10, 3-6) host #16/16 Wichita State (17-4, 7-2) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 (ESPN2 / 1210 AM WPHT). Temple looks to keep its momentum going after an 85-57 win over UConn on Sunday, while the Shockers go for win number three in a row after a recent two-game slide.
White Out
> The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive a free "White Out" t-shirt. All fans are encouraged to wear white to support the Owls!
Promotions
> Temple is honoring two of its five Elite Eight teams this season, and the second, the 1987-88 Owls, will be honored at halftime vs. Wichita State.
> It's the 30th Anniversary for the 1987-88 team, who finished 32-2 overall and was the #1 ranked team by the Associated Press at season's end.
> Freshman guard Mark Macon led the team and was named to the AP All-America Second Team. Macon was joined on the All-Atlantic 10 First Team by his backcourt mate, senior Howard Evans, and fellow senior forward Tim Perry, who earned A10 Player of the Year accolades.Â
> Junior forward Mike Vreeswyk earned second team all-conference honors.
Scouting Temple
> The season's biggest loss and biggest win both happened in a 1-1 effort for Temple last week, as the Owls lost 75-42 at #9/8 Cincinnati before rebounding for an 85-57 win vs. UConn four days later.
> Temple's 28-point win marked both its largest victory of the year and also its largest lead in any game. The Owls also dished a season-high 20 assists, committed a season-low five turnovers, and had four players reach double figures in scoring. Leading the way were Shizz Alston, Jr. with 18 points and Quinton Rose with 17.
> The freshman class has been very impactful as of late, particularly Nate Pierre-Louis who ranks third on the team in scoring for AAC games (10.0 ppg) and scored a career-high 23 points vs. Memphis. De'Vondre Perry has come off the bench early in many games, while J.P. Moorman II has also come on strong as of late to average 6.3 rebounds per game over the last four contests.
> Rose is the Owls' leading scorer with 14.2 ppg, ranking 12th in the league. Junior Shizz Alston, Jr. is averaging 13.1 ppg (16th in the AAC).
> Either Rose or Alston have led or tied for the team lead in scoring in 16 of 21 of Temple's games in 2017-18.
Scouting Wichita State
> The #17/16 Shockers were ranked as high as #5 in both polls before recently suffering an 0-2 week with losses to SMU and Houston.
> WSU rebounded with home wins against both UCF and Tulsa last week to improve to 17-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
> The Shockers average a league-best 83.4 points per game along with shooting a league-best .482 from the field and pulling down a conference-high 41.9 rebounds per game.
> Redshirt sophomore guard Landry Shamet leads Wichita State with 14.6 ppg and averages an AAC-best 5.2 assists per game. Three other Shockers also average in double figures in scoring including redshirt senior center Shaquille Norris (12.8 ppg) who leads all players in the league with 37 total blocks.
> Wichita State went 31-5 in 2016-17, advancing to the NCAA Second Round for a second straight year.
