Alston and Rose Combine for 50 Points in Men's Basketball's Win over Georgia
11.13.18 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - With a pair of 25-point efforts, senior Shizz Alston, Jr. and junior Quinton Rose led Temple men's basketball (3-0) past Georgia (1-1) by a score of 81-77 for the Owls' third straight win to start the season. Alston scored his 1,000th career point early in the second half, becoming the 53rd player in program history to do so.
Game Summary
> Temple led by as many as 12 three times midway through the second half, but the Bulldogs cut the margin all the way down to two with 27 seconds left.
> Georgia forced a turnover for a chance to tie or take the lead, but a big defensive board by senior Ernest Aflakpui put the ball back in the Owls' hands, and Alston sank two free throws with 3.5 seconds left to seal the win.
> The Owls overcame 51 percent shooting by Georgia thanks to forcing 20 turnovers on the Bulldogs and finishing with a 22-8 lead in points off turnovers.
> Temple was solid at the line for the third time in as many games this season, making 15-of-18 free throws.
Individual Highlights
> Alston had nine points at the break before exploding for 16 in the second half. He also dished a game-high six assists and tallied three steals.
> Rose's 25 points came on 11-of-24 shooting. He was the most recent Owl to make 10 field goals in a game, doing so nearly a year ago on Nov. 30, 2017 in a win over South Carolina.
> Scoring in double digits for a third straight game along with Alston and Rose was sophomore Nate Pierre-Louis with 16 points. He made 6-of-6 free throws and tied Alston with a game-high three steals.
> Aflakpui's final rebound was his team-high ninth of the game.
First Half
> Georgia held a slim lead in the early going, twice by as many as four in an opening 10 minutes of action that also saw four ties.
> Alani Moore II drained a pair of three-pointers in a stretch where he scored eight straight points for the Owls, giving them a 19-17 lead at 10:52.
> Four lead changes followed before a 9-2 run, capped by five straight points by Rose, gave Temple a six-point, 30-24 lead with 6:31 left.
> The Owls maintained momentum down the stretch, building their first double-digit lead on a steal and an old-fashioned three-point play by Pierre-Louis.
> Two more points from Pierre-Louis at the line gave the Owls their largest lead of 12, but Georgia got it back to eight with four straight free throws.
> Damion Moore came up with a big offensive rebound in the final minute, leading to a late long range bucket by Alston to put Temple back up by 11 at halftime, 45-34.
Second Half
> Alston scored his 1,000th point early in the half and went on to score 16 in the second period alone.
> The Bulldogs cut an 11-point Temple lead down to four points, 49-45 at 16:40 after a 9-2 run.
> The Owls answered with a 7-0 run to go back up by 11 near the 15-minute mark, and twice built a 12-point lead immediately after.
> With a 7-0 run of their own, the Bulldogs battled back to make it a five-point game, 63-58 with 8:31 remaining.
> It remained a two or three possession game, but back-to-back three-pointers by Alston near the four-minute mark kept Georgia from narrowing the Owls' lead to fewer than four points until near the final minute.
> With 1:12 to go, a pair of Georgia free throws made it a three-point game, 77-74, but a turnaround jumper by Rose at 44 seconds gave Temple some room to breathe.
> The Owls would need every bit of it as Rayshaun Hammonds drained a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to make it 79-77.
> Georgia then forced a turnover on Temple's inbounds pass to earn a chance to tie or take the lead, but missed a jumper and Aflakpui grabbed his huge defensive rebound.
> With 3.5 seconds left, Alston calmly sank two free throws for a four-point lead to seal the victory.
