Men's Basketball Downs USF, 73-55, for Fifth Straight Win

TAMPA – Temple used hot second half shooting to pull away at USF in posting its fifth straight win, 73-55, Saturday at the Sun Dome. The Owls (15-10, 7-6 AAC) connected on 55 percent from the field and used a 17-3 run to break open a tie game at the half against the Bulls (8-18, 1-12).
Keys to the Game
> Sophomore Quinton Rose (20 pts) and junior Shizz Alston, Jr. (19) accounted for over half of the Owls scoring in the contest.
> Temple started off the second frame with seven straight points to take control after the teams were tied, 30-30, at intermission. The Owls never trailed over the final 20 minutes.
> Rose scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, making 6-of-11 of his shots after a sub-par (1-6 FG) opening frame.
> Senior guard Josh Brown, who scored 12 points while tying Rose and Ernest Aflakpui for team honors in rebounding (6), held USF's leading scorer, Stephan Jiggetts, to six points and zero assists.
Individual Highlights
> Alston dished a game-high five assists against just one turnover and now has 29 assists and a mere three turnovers over the current five-game win streak.
> Rose had a season-high four steals, tying for the most by an Owl this season.
First Half
> It was a tightly-contested first half featuring four lead changes and seven ties with Josh Brown's lay-up with 1.7 seconds left accounting for the final deadlock of the period.
> Both teams struggled offensively with neither scoring in a four-minute stretch from 9:56 until a Nate Pierre-Louis lay-up put Temple ahead 20-15 with 5:49 remaining.
> USF scored six of the next seven points to tie the game at 21 with Payton Banks tallying five of his team-high 10 points in the stretch.
> The lead went back and forth until Brown's basket knotted the game at 30.
Second Half
> Temple took control from the start, scoring the first seven points of the half to take a 37-30 lead.
> USF stayed within striking distance as the Bulls pushed the ball inside to Isaiah Manderson, who scored eight of the 12 points for the hosts in a run with his layup at the 11:36 mark cutting the TU lead to two, 46-44.
> Temple answered with a 17-3 run capped by consecutive threes from Brown and Obi Enechionyia and a three-point play by Rose to make it 63-47 with 5:43 to play.
> The Owls would never look back and extended the margin to 21 on two occasions, the last coming on a three by J.P. Moorman II in the final minute.

> Temple moved its record in league play above .500 for the first time all season and at 7-6 are alone in fifth place in the conference standings.
> It was the ninth straight win for the Owls over the Bulls with Temple owning a 9-2 lead in the series.
