Field Hockey Travels to California to Face UC Davis and Pacific for Opening Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - The 2018 season will start with two away games in California for Temple field hockey. The Owls will face off with UC Davis on Friday, Aug. 24 and then head to Pacific on Sunday, Aug. 26. Temple will be back in Philadelphia for its home opener next weekend, hosting #6 Penn State on Friday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
Scouting the Owls
> Temple hopes to improve its overall record after coming off a 4-14 season in 2017.
> The Owls will be led by three co-captains this year in seniors Maris Stern and Nellie Doyle and junior Kathryn Edgar.
> Edgar returns along with Lucy Reed as the team's highest scorers with two points apiece. Edgar also recorded a team-best five assists in the 2017 season.
> Head coach Marybeth Freeman is back for a fourth season with the Owls, and has guided them to a pair of BIG EAST Tournament berths in her tenure.
Scouting the Aggies
> UC Davis struggled in 2017, finishing 1-14 overall with its lone win coming against Bryant University.
> Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow returns for the Aggies. She made a career high 15 saves in a loss to Syracuse as a sophomore.
> Sophomore Nicola Prebble was an America East All-Championship Team selection for the Aggies last year. They also welcome back redshirt sophomore Sara Janetzky who suffered a season-ending injury in 2017, after being named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2016.Â
Scouting the Tigers
> The Pacific Tigers finished 10-9 overall and 4-2 in the West Coast Conference last season.
> Sophomore Marlise van Tonder returns in goal after recording 14 saves against UConn and posting a .684 save percentage. Van Tonder competed for South Africa in the Women's World Cup in London over the summer, and is the first player in Pacific program history to represent the Tigers at the World Cup.
> The Tigers competed in the America East Conference semifinals in 2017 but fell to #18 Stanford, 3-2.
Series History vs. UC Davis
> Temple leads the series 1-0 against UC Davis after the teams met for the first time last season. The Owls won 3-2 in overtime at home.
Series History vs. Pacific
> Temple leads the series 1-0 against Pacific after winning a 1986 match ending in a score of 3-0.
