Field Hockey Falls to No. 6 Penn State Despite Chloe Johnson's Career Performance

8.31.18 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Despite an outstanding career high 19 saves by Temple field hockey's senior goalkeeper Chloe Johnson, the Owls gave up a few late goals and lost 4-0 to #6 Penn State (2-0). Temple (0-3) held the sixth-ranked team to just a single goal for the first 57 minutes with a strong defensive effort.

Game Summary
> Penn State dominated the game in terms of offensive possessions, but the Owls' defense thwarted a huge number of opportunities for the Nittany Lions.
> Johnson made 12 first-half saves, allowing just a single goal on a penalty corner by Anna Simon in the 30th minute.
> The Lions had a total of 21 penalty corner opportunities, but scored on just two of those.
> The halftime score of 1-0 held through to the 58th minute when Penn State's Simon once again scored on a corner.
> Penn State scored twice more in the next eight minutes with two unassisted goals including the final one off a rebound in the 66th minute.

Individual Highlights
> Johnson's 19 saves were seven more than her career high, achieved in the Owls' last game at Pacific.
> Sophomore back Dani Batze made two defensive saves and leads all players in the BIG EAST Conference with four defensive saves this season.
> Junior back Becky Gerhart also tallied one defensive save.

Postgame Quotes - Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman
> "Our defense did a great job. Anytime you see a team like Penn State and the amount of attacking force that they have, we were hoping it was going to be a strong defensive game for us to really put our best foot forward in that regard. Overall, not only were our backs strong but our forwards did a good job on our press too."

> "We all need to improve in every area of the field, but as far as the speed of the game in transition, we need to look to put pressure on the ball more quickly and generate that attack."

> "Chloe didn't (leave much room for improvement). She did a great job, having 19 saves. And Dani having three defensive saves in the game, that's just unheard of. Collectively as a unit they did a great job, especially our defensive penalty corner unit."
