Field Hockey Heads to Lafayette on Friday; Hosts Kent State Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey hopes to find its first win this season as the Owls face Lafayette and Kent State this weekend. Temple will play Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa., and Kent State on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at Howarth Field.

Promotions
> All field hockey players in grades 7-12 are invited to the pre-game clinic on Sept. 23. The cost is $40. Email Montana Fleming at Montana.Fleming@temple.edu and include your name, age, grade, position and high school. Participants will build elite attacking and defensive skills. The clinic is from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. with registration starting at 8 a.m. Temple takes on Towson at noon. The clinic and game are both at Howarth Field.

Scouting Temple
> Temple is still looking for its first win heading into the weekend, going 0-4 to start the season. The Owls were edged 3-2 in the final minute at UC Davis and have since suffered shutout losses to Pacific (3-0), #6 Penn State (4-0) and Fairfield (2-0).
> Senior goalkeeper Chloe Johnson made 12 saves at Pacific and followed it up with a career-high 19 saves vs. #6 Penn State. Johnson and the defense held the Nittany Lions to just a single goal through 57 minutes of action.
> Sophomore back Dani Batze leads all players in the BIG EAST with four defensive saves so far, which also ranks third in NCAA Division I.
> The Owls have seven returning starters in 2018 and are led by team captains Maris Stern (redshirt senior midfielder), Nellie Doyle (senior back) and Kathryn Edgar (junior midfielder).
> Temple struggled in 2017, going 4-14 and 0-7 in BIG EAST play.
> The biggest loss for the Owls to graduation was Rachael Mueller, an All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree who led Temple with six goals and 16 total points. Edgar had a team-best five assists and ranked second with nine total points.
> Three of Temple's losses a year ago were against nationally ranked teams, while another loss was to Saint Joseph's, later also ranked in the Top 25. On this year's slate are five teams ranked in the NFHCA Top 25.
> With 13 defensive saves, the Owls ranked second among all teams in NCAA Division I in 2017. Batze led the way with four defensive saves (14th in the nation), and Doyle was right behind her with three defensive saves (25th in the nation).

> The Leopards are coming off a 7-11 season last year and are 0-3 so far in 2018.
> Lafayette continues to look for its first win of the season after falling 3-1 to Fairfield in its season opener and dropping road games at Richmond (4-2) and #22 William and Mary (4-1).
> The Leopards are led by three co-captains including two-time Second-Team All-Patriot League honoree Lisa van der Geest. Van der Geest had a team-best six assists and totaled 10 points last season.
> Lafayette suffered a loss on offense to graduation in Ellen Colbourne and Rosie Shanks. Shanks recorded five goals and two assists, while Colbourne added five assists to three goals.

> The Golden Flashes are coming off a 9-10 season that saw them advance to the MAC Championship game before falling 2-1 to Miami (OH).
> Kent State earned its first win of the season on Sept. 2, topping Saint Louis 1-0 at home. The Golden Flashes' goal was scored by MAC Conference Player of the Week Clara Rodriguez Seto. Kent State has also suffered losses to Old Dominion, Michigan State, #12 Northwestern and #23 Liberty.
> Included in the Golden Flashes' returning starters are All-MAC Second Team selections Rodriguez and Berta Jover Llorens.
> Head Coach Kathleen Wiler enters her 13th season with an overall record of 133-118.
