Men's Basketball Opens Orlando Invitational Against #5 Maryland

ORLANDO - Temple Men's Basketball opens play in the Orlando Invitational on Thanksgiving morning as the Owls (4-0) take on #5 Maryland (5-0) on ESPN2 at 11 am. It is the first of three games for the Cherry and White in the tournament with the team also playing Friday and Sunday.
Scouting Temple
> This is the second time that the Owls will take part in the Orlando Invitational, the last time was in 2010 when the tournament was dubbed the Old Spice Invitational.
> Temple, under the direction of first-year head coach Aaron McKie, is led by the guard tandem of Nate Pierre-Louis and Quinton Rose.  Pierre-Louis leads the Owls in scoring (15.8 ppg), assists (3.8 apg) and steals (3.8 spg) while topping the American Athletic Conference in rebounding (10.8 rpg). Rose is second on the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and leads the Owls in three-point shooting (8-20, 40%).
> Senior Alani Moore II runs the offense, averaging 9.8 points and 2.5 assist per game while juniors J.P. Moorman II (4.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Justyn Hamilton (5.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg) round out the starting five.
> McKie has utilized a deep bench with nine players averaging double-figure minutes and a 10th, redshirt Arashama Parks, averaging 10.5 mpg over the last two games.
> Junior De'Vondre Perry (8.8 ppg) and freshman Josh Pierre-Louis (5.8 ppg) provide the offensive spark off the bench.
Scouting Maryland
> Under the direction of head coach Mark Turgeon, #5 Maryland has won each of its first five games by double-digits for the first time since the 1998-99 season.
> The Terrapins feature a balanced attack with four players averaging double figures led by sophomore forward Jalen Smith (14.4 ppg, 9.4 rpg).
> Senior Anthony Cowan, Jr. (13.0 ppg, 4.6 apg) directs the offense that also features sophomore guards Aaron Wiggings (10.6 ppg) and Eric Ayala (10.4 ppg).
Series History
> This will be the 11th meeting between the teams.
> Temple leads 6-4, having won the last three meetings.
> The teams last met in 2012 in front of a sellout crowd at the Palestra, with Temple taking a 73-60 victory over the Terrapins.
> The only prior meeting in an in-season tournament between the programs came in the championship game of the 2001 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Second-ranked Maryland won that contest over #16 Temple, 82-74, at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 9.
Last Meeting: Jan. 21, 2012 - Temple 73, Maryland (The Palestra)
> Ramone Moore and Khalif Wyatt each finished with 20 points while Juan Fernandez added 14 to lead Temple to the win over Maryland in front of a sold out Palestra crowd. Wyatt tied his career-high with seven assists while Fernandez dished five assists and tied Mark Tyndale (04-08) for 10th place (377 assists) on TU's alltime list.
> Temple shared the ball to the tune of 20 assists on 27 baskets in a 73-60 win over visiting Maryland.
> This was a game that Temple trailed for only 30 seconds (8-7 at 14:55 mark), but the Owls were never truly comfortable until the final minute of play.
> The Owls shot nearly 50 percent (27-55, .491) from the field, and drained nine three-pointers (40.9%). Temple also out-rebounded the Terps, 31-30, but Maryland's 7-1 center Alex Len was limited to just seven minutes as he injured his ankle in the first half.
> Maryland was led by Terrell Stoglin (20 pts) andPe'Shon Howard (15).

> Temple, which took part in the 2010 Old Spice Classic in Orlando held over Thanksgiving weekend, is joined by Davidson, Fairfield, Harvard, Marquette, Maryland, Texas A&M and USC.
> Five of the eight teams in the field made the postseason in 2018-19. Temple, Maryland and Marquette reached the NCAA Tournament while Davidson ad Harvard played in the National Invitational Tournament.
> The Owls last met Texas A&M in the 2010 Old Spice Classic with the Aggies winning 54-51 in the fifth place game.
> Temple and Harvard have only played twice, the last coming 40 years ago with the Owls winning 85-73 at the 1979 Maryland Invitational in College Park. Md.
