Gymnastics to Host Ken Anderson Invitational Friday

PHILADELPHIA— Temple women's gymnastics will welcome Bridgeport and Ursinus to McGonigle Hall on Friday, Feb. 22 for the Ken Anderson Invitational. Competition is set to begin at 7 p.m.
The Owls
>The Owls are led by head coach Josh Nilson, who is in his first season leading the Cherry and White.
> The squad is looking to remain unbeaten at home (3-0), as they welcome Bridgeport and Ursinus for the Ken Anderson Invitational. Temple defeated Ithaca, Penn and Ursinus in its last competition at McGonigle Hall.
> Last time out, Temple (7-10, 1-1 ECAC) fell 196.575-194.050 in a dual meet matchup at Southern Utah (3-3, 1-2 MRGC) on Friday, Feb. 15. The Owls tied their season-high on vault and posted their second-highest floor score of the season.
> Temple's strongest event against Southern Utah was floor, as the Owls scored a 48.775. This performance was highlighted by a pair of 9.85s earned by sophomore Tori Edwards and senior India Anderson. Freshman Ariana Castrence and sophomore Monica Servidio also came up big for the Owls, scoring 9.775 and 9.75, respectively.
> Castrence was named ECAC Rookie of the Week for her outstanding performance in last weekend's dual meet, placing second in the all-around competition with a 39.000. Castrence posted a 9.7 on vault, 9.725 on bars, 9.8 on beam and 9.775 on floor to earn her second-highest all-around score of the season. Her marks on beam and bars were team-highs. This is Castrence's second ECAC weekly honor, as she was named Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 15.
Scouting Bridgeport
> Bridgeport is led by head coach Byron Knox, who is in his 15th season at the helm of the program.
> Last time out, Bridgeport competed in Penn's Pink Meet against West Virginia, Temple and Penn on Sunday, Feb. 10. The Purple Knights placed second, behind West Virginia and ahead of Temple and Penn, with a 194.775.
> The team posted a 48.325 on vault, 48.950 on bars, 48.700 on beam and 48.800 on floor.
> The Owls lead the all-time series against the Purple Knights, 19-12. The teams last met on Feb. 10 at Penn's Pink Meet. Bridgeport came out on top, 194.775-193.575.
Scouting Ursinus
> Ursinus is led by Kim Valenti, who is in her first season as head coach of the Bears.
> Ursinus last competed on Sunday, Feb. 17 at West Chester. The Bears fell to the Rams, 191.725-182.800.
> The squad posted a 46.875 on vault, 46.000 on bars, 44.600 on beam and 45.325 on floor.
> Temple holds the advantage in the series against Ursinus, 54-3. The Owls and Bears last met on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Temple's Pink Meet. The Owls won, 194.150-174.175.
About the Ken Anderson Invitational
> Friday's competition will be held in honor of the late Ken Anderson, a former head coach of the Temple women's gymnastics program. Anderson led the Owls for 21 seasons before passing away in 2008 due to a long battle with cancer. During his tenure as Temple women's gymnastics coach, Anderson boasted a 228-282 all-time record and led the 1992 squad to a team appearance at the NCAA Regionals. As the all-time winningest women's gymnastics coach in school history, Anderson earned numerous accolades including Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year in both 1987 and 1992. He was also named the NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year in 1989.
