Field Hockey Posts Shutout Victory to Open Ciufo Era

8.30.19 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Temple Field Hockey posted a 3-0 victory over visiting Merrimack Friday evening to make new head coach Susan Ciufo a winner in her debut on the Cherry and White sidelines.  It was also the first season-opening win by the Owls since a 4-2 victory over Northeastern in 2014.

Recapping the Game
> The teams played a scoreless first half with the best opportunity to score coming in the final minute of the second quarter when Merrimack goalkeeper Katharina Ohmen making a diving save off a blast by Temple sophomore Kerrie Lorenz.
> Temple jumped all over the visitors to start the half as junior Dani Batze pushed home a rebound off a blast by redshirt sophomore Natalie Burns to open the scoring in the second minute of the third quarter.
> Five minutes later it was freshman Sydney Beck finding a breaking Lorenz, who drilled it past Ohmen to make it 2-0.
> The Owls continued to pepper Ohmen, who was stellar in goal, but were unable to tally another goal in the period.
> Temple converted on a corner in the final four minutes to ice the game.  Sophomore Nienke Oerlemans took the corner, passing to sophomore Claire Thomas at the top of the circle.  Thomas then fed senior Kathryn Edgar for the final tally.

Statistically Speaking
> The Owls defense allowed just five shots with junior goalkeeper Cristina Carotenuto making four saves in recording the shutout.
> Temple outshot Merrimack, 28-5, with 18 shots coming in the second half.
> Ohmen, a Division II All-American last season, recorded 14 saves for the Warriors.
> The Owls also had 11 corners with Merrimack recording three.

Quotable
> "Obviously we are really excited.  The ladies worked real hard all summer, worked really hard in preseason. So to have them come out and feel this kind of success tonight I think it is huge for the rest of our season."  - Temple coach Susan Ciufo
