9.20.19 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple field hockey team fell 4-0 against No. 13 Liberty Friday afternoon in the team's conference opener. The loss marked the first time an opponent defeated the Owls at home as well as the first time an opponent scored at Howarth Field this season.
Recapping the Game
> The Flames dominated the offensive side of the game, outshooting the Owls 16-4.
> The first quarter saw little action, with Liberty going ahead on a penalty corner with 13 seconds until the second quarter.
> Temple had chances to convert two penalty corners, but Liberty's defense stopped the attack.
Statistically Speaking
> Four Owls each had a shot against Liberty, with Tali Popinko, Kerrie Lorenz, Kathryn Edgar, and Lucy Reed making an attempt. Reed had the lone shot on goal for Temple.
> Goalkeeper Cristina Carotenuto recorded four saves in the cage, tying her season-high for saves in a game.
Quotable
"Liberty is a really strong team, and we were playing a little on our heels in the first half so coming out of halftime we were more aggressive. They put a lot of pressure on us when we had the ball, so we are going to work on our progressions tomorrow. We knew we were the underdogs coming in, so we had to play smarter. We're a transitioning program, and the girls are still getting used to that. We played really hard defensively, and we had a lot of energy throughout the entire game. With every opponent we face, there are lessons that we can take away so it was good for us to play a team that was so aggressive. We're excited to get back out there and get ready for Sunday." – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo
Next Up
> Temple will close out its three-match homestand against cross-town foe Drexel.
