Field Hockey Drops First Match of Season at Kent State
9.6.19 | Field Hockey
KENT, Ohio – For the third straight match Temple field hockey played to a 3-0 decision. Friday, however, the Owls were on the losing end of the stick as host Kent State handed the Cherry and White its first loss of the season. Temple falls to 2-1 while KSU improves to 2-1.
Recapping the Game
> Both teams rattled off six shots in the opening quarter, but it was the last shot of the frame that found the back of the cage. Clara Seto Rodriguez pushed home a rebound off a shot by Emma Bressler to covert a penalty corner with just over three minutes on the clock. It was the first score against the Owls, ending junior goalkeeper Cristina Carotenuto's string of scoreless minutes to start the season at 72.
> Kent State had the better of the play in the second quarter, taking four shots to Temple's one. Temple's defense held strong until the final minute when Seto Rodriguez fed Laura Richter on a long pass which Richter fired home with 10 seconds remaining to make it 2-0.
> The third quarter was a defensive battle with neither team attempting a shot on goal.
> Seto Rodriguez scored her second of the match with just under 10 minutes remaining to provide the Golden Flashes with an insurance goal. Again it came off a corner and was assisted by Bressler.
> Lorenz, the Owls' leading scorer (2g, 1a) on the season, had two shots on goal in the final minute, but both were stopped by KSU keeper Azure Fernsler (7 saves).
Statistically Speaking
> Kent State attempted 17 shots while Temple managed 12. The hosts also had the edge on penalty corners, 10-7.
> Lorenz attempted the most shots for the Owls with four and her two shots on goal were tied with senior co-captain Kathryn Edgar for the most by a TU player.
Quotable
> "There were a lot of good moments in the second half for us today. We started a bit slow which allowed Kent to get on the board early on. In the second half we had relentless pressure in our press and created a lot of opportunities in our attacking 25 that we were unable to take advantage of today. Kent played a physical game and did a nice job of forcing us into their press.
This is a great game for us as we move forward and continue to develop our ability to possess the ball in crucial moments and take care of our details.
For now we're focused on preparing the group for another tough game against Maine tomorrow!" – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo
Next Up
> Temple stays in Kent, Ohio and takes on Maine (9 am) Saturday.
