Track and Field Set for Two-Day Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple track and field team will continue its indoor slate at the two-day Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25. The Owls will begin competition at 1:30 p.m. on the banked track at the N.Y. Armory, located in the Bronx, N.Y.
About the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge
> The Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Chelby Elam and Brielle Lewis will get the weekend started for the Owls, racing the 60m dash prelims at 1:30 p.m. with finals scheduled for 3:30.
> Sydney Williams will compete in the 60m hurdle prelims at 2 p.m., with finals scheduled for 3:20. At 2:30 p.m. the Cherry and White will put together its first distance medley relay of the season, stringing together a quartet from Helene Gottlieb, Marissa White, Alanna Lally Millie Howard, Mallorie Smith or Mikaela Vlasic to combine to race the 4,000m relay.
> Simultaneously to the DMR, Candus Burks and Tannekee Strachan will represent the Owls in the long jump at 2:30 p.m. to wrap up Friday's portion of the meet.
> On Saturday, the 3000m will be raced at 10 a.m. and 1:36 p.m. (invite), with Michelle Joyce, Cat Shontz and Grace Moore all competing. The 800m will be run at 10:53 a.m., 12:31 p.m. and 1:08 p.m. (invite) and will feature Howard and Lally.
> The 400m will be raced at 11:08 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. (college) with Smith and White representing the Owls. The mile will be held at 12:14 p.m. and 3:08 p.m. and will feature Gottlieb and Vlasic. Following, the 200m will be raced at 12:23 and 1:58 p.m. with Lewis returning to compete.
> At 12:45, Aisha Brown will compete in the invite section of the high jump. Burks and Strachan will return for the triple jump at 1:45 p.m., and the weekend will conclude with the 4x400m relay at 3:32 p.m.

> The Owls debuted the 2020 portion of their indoor slate last Saturday at the Penn 8-Team Select. The meet was highlighted by individual victories by Howard and Lally as well as multiple top-times for the season thus far.
> Williams got the action started for the Owls on the straightaway for the 60m hurdles. The junior had a solid rust-buster in prelims, clocking in at 9.06 to advance to finals. In the finals, she bested her previous time by .02, finishing sixth overall with a time of 9.04.
> A handful of distance runners made their 2020 track debuts with a steady group performance in the mile. Howard took the title, racing the 1600m in 4:51.01 to emerge victorious in the 49-person field. In her first track race in Cherry and White in almost a year, Moore also had a superb race to finish fifth in the mile with a time of 4:53.01. Vlasic clocked in at 5:00.05 for her first race of 2020, good for 12th overall.
> Moore, Howard and Gottlieb each returned to the track to represent the Owls in the 3000m. Moore took the top spot for the Cherry and White, clocking in at 9:48.45 to take silver. Howard trailed her teammate by just over two seconds, finishing third with a time of 9:51.00. Rounding out the top-five for the Owls was Gottlieb, who ran the 3K in 10:06.56. Joyce also earned a spot in the top-10 with a time of 10:16.99.
> Burks had a pair of steady performances in the field, finishing fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.52m and placing eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.43m. Following, the 4x400m relay of Smith, Vlasic, Lally and Williams finished the evening well for Temple, earning fifth with a time of 3:55.89.
