Women’s Basketball Looks for Second-Straight AAC Win at Houston on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team is set for a 3 p.m. tipoff this Saturday, Jan. 4 in Tulsa, Oklahoma for their first game of the New Year as they resume conference action. 

THE OWLS
> Temple looks to win their third-straight game at Houston, following an exciting 74-65 overtime win at Tulsa. 
> Mia Davis has registered a double-double in the last five games as she averages a double-double of 19.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game to lead the Owls. Davis also leads the conference on the boards. 
> Ashley Jones adds 16.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game to aid the Owls on all areas of the floor. 
> Marissa Mackins has registered 20-point performances in two consecutive games. The sophomore was most recently named Big 5 Player of the Week after putting up 25 points in the overtime win at Tulsa. 
> Freshman Asonah Alexander leads both Temple and the American in assists per game with 5.1. The rookie adds 6.1 points and 5.7 rebounds each game. 
> Lena Niang rounds out the Owls' top five scorers with her 7.3 points per game. The graduate student also pulls down 5.9 boards per contest. 

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 74, Tulsa 65 (OT)
> Mackins led the Owls with 25 points as Temple defeated Tulsa in overtime on Jan. 4.
> Temple rebounded from a slow first quarter in a close game that featured eight ties and 10 lead changes.
> The Owls led by as many as nine in the game, but Tulsa stayed within striking distance, including forcing overtime in the final seconds.
> In the extra session, Temple dominated, holding Tulsa to just five points to give the Owls their first conference victory of the year.
> For the game, Temple out-shot Tulsa, 43% to 37% while holding a 48-35 advantage on the boards.
> Mackins surpassed the 20-point mark for the second straight game, connecting for five threes.
> Davis notched a double-double on her birthday, racking up 19 points and 13 rebounds.
> Niang also tallied a double-double with 14 points and a career-best 12 boards
> Alexa Williamson finished with eight points and eight boards, while Alexander dished out eight assists.

SCOUTING HOUSTON
> Four of Houston's starters average double-digits, providing a balanced attack for the Cougars. 
> Dorian Branch leads Houston with 12.3 points per game, while Tatyanna Hill adds 11.7, Dymond Gladney chips in 10.8 and Julia Blackshell-Fair tallies 10.7 per contest. 
> Leading the Cougars on the boards is Hill, who pulls down 6.6 rebounds each outing. 
> Houston is currently third in the conference with 15.1 offensive rebounds per game, allowing them to have multiple second-chance shots. 
> The Cougars are one of six teams in the conference shooting over 40% from the floor as they hold a 40.1% field goal percentage. 

LAST TIME OUT: Houston 75, Memphis 65
> Four Cougars posted double-digit efforts as Houston topped Memphis Jan. 5 as both teams opened conference play. 
> Julia Blackshell-Fair led all players with 19 points, while leading Houston in rebounds (8) and assists (6). 
> Dorian Branch and Dymond Gladney added 18 points apiece and Tatyana Hill chipped in 14 for the Cougars.
> Memphis held the edge on the boards, outrebounding the Cougars 42-28.
> Houston shot 46.7% from the floor, just slightly better than Memphis' 44.6% field goal percentage. 

TEMPLE VS. HOUSTON
> Temple leads 9-2 in the all-time series against the Cougars. 
> The two programs first met on Feb. 4, 2014 at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston. Temple won the matchup 79-46 as five Owls finished with double-digits.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 76, Houston 65 
> The Owls topped Houston 76-65 in their last meeting on Feb. 5, 2019 at the Liacouras Center. 
> Temple had a huge fourth quarter, outscoring Houston 23-15, to turn a three-point lead into an 11-point win.
> Tied 21-21 after one, Temple held just a one-point lead after three.
> The Owls out-shot Houston, 37.9% to 34.4%, while holding a 47-43 lead on the glass.
> A game removed from setting a career best with 30 points, Davis topped it by three, while also tying a career high with her 17 rebounds.
> Alliya Butts added 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
> Mackins chipped in with 14 points and four boards.
