Women’s Basketball Hosts SMU Sunday to Open Conference Play

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team will host SMU Sunday, Dec. 20 in McGonigle Hall for a 2 p.m. tip-off to open American Athletic Conference action. 

THE OWLS
> The Cherry and White look to win their first game of the season against conference foe SMU. The Owls enter their first AAC matchup at 0-3 on the year. 
> Senior Mia Davis averages 24.3 points and 8.7 rebounds to lead Temple over their opening three games. 
> Senior Emani Mayo is the second leading scorer for the Owls with 9.0 points per contest, while pulling down 5.3 boards each game. 
> Sophomore Asonah Alexander leads Temple in the assist column with 5.3 per game. The guard has also been a force on the boards, averaging 7.3 rebounds per outing. 
> Graduate transfer Jada Graves has added a spark for Temple on both the offensive and defensive ends. The guard leads the Owls with her field goal percentage of 58.3%, while tying freshman Jasha Clinton with five steals on the year. 

LAST TIME OUT: #5 South Carolina 103, Temple 41
> The Owls fell 103-41 at #5 South Carolina on Thursday, Dec. 17.
> Temple shot just 23.3% from the floor and 17.4% from three-point range. 
> The Gamecocks shot 53.4% (39-73) from the field while knocking down eight threes. 
> South Carolina  used 20 second-chance points and 30 points off turnovers to fuel their way past the Owls. 
> Davis led the Owls with 17 points and seven rebounds. 
> E. Mayo was the second leading scorer for Temple with 11 points. The senior guard added four rebounds and a steal to her stat line. 
> Alexander led Temple in the assists column with three while Rayniah Walker recorded a career-best three blocks.

SCOUTING SMU
> The Mustangs arrive in Philadelphia at 0-5 (0-1 AAC) to start the season. 
> Kayla White and Rhyle McKinney lead SMU in scoring with 11.0 and 9.6 points per game, respectively.
> McKinney currently holds a free throw percentage of 100%, shooting a perfect 10-for-10 across the opening five games. 
> Reagan Bradley leads the Mustangs in both rebounds (6.2) and assists (1.8).
> Amber Bacon has picked off eight passes for SMU to average 2.7 steals per game.
> SMU has averaged 55.4 points per game while allowing their opponents to score 73.6 per game. 

LAST TIME OUT: ECU 50, SMU 46
> SMU dropped their first conference game of the year at home against ECU, 50-46, on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
> The Mustangs held a 42-33 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. However, ECU held SMU to just four points in the final frame as the Pirates scored 17 to walk away with the win. 
> SMU outrebounded ECU, 37-31. 
> ECU scored 23 points off of SMU's 24 turnovers. 
> McKinney paced the Mustangs with 10 points followed by Bradley and Jahnaria Brown with seven points apiece. 

TEMPLE VS. SMU
> The Owls lead 7-4 in the all-time series against SMU. 
> Temple holds an undefeated 6-0 record at home against the Mustangs.
> On the road, SMU holds the advantage as Temple has dropped four out of five games played at Moody Coliseum. 
> The first meeting between the two programs came on Jan. 14, 2014 in Philadelphia, with the Owls winning 80-66.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 85, SMU 62
> In their last meeting, the Owls topped SMU 85-62 on Jan. 11, 2020 in McGonigle Hall.  
> Temple led from start to finish, using huge advantages in the first and third quarters to set the tone of the game.
> The Owls led by 11 at the half and increased that lead to 34 points early in the fourth quarter before Temple emptied its bench.
> The Cherry and White shot 45.9% for the game to SMU's 31.5%, while the Owls connected on 10 threes, holding the Mustangs to just three from long range.
> Temple also held a 52-43 advantage on the glass for the game.
> Davis led Temple on both ends of the floor, notching her seventh straight double-double. The forward finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-best six assists, playing just the first three quarters. She now has 11 double-doubles this season and 28 in her career.
> Alexander had another solid all-around performance with eight points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds.
> Graduate student Lena Niang netted 11 points with five boards while senior Shannen Atkinson had nine points and eight rebounds.
