Rose Sparks Men's Basketball to Overtime Win Against SMU

PHILADELPHIA — Senior Quinton Rose became the American Athletic Conference's all-time leading scorer, as the shorthanded Temple men's basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit to top visiting SMU in overtime, 97-90, at the Liacouras Center on Saturday afternoon. Temple improves to 12-11 overall (4-7 AAC) while SMU falls to 16-6 (6-4 AAC).

Game Summary
> Playing without starter J.P. Moorman II and key reserve De'Vondre Perry, the Owls used a thrilling second half comeback to erase SMU's advantage and force overtime.
> Backed by 10 points from Rose, Temple outscored SMU 17-10 in the extra period to seal the win.
> SMU was lights out from the floor in the first half, shooting 63%, including 64% (9-14) from long range. 
> After leading by as many as 19, SMU held a 48-31 advantage at the half, before Temple flipped the script, outscoring the Mustangs 49-32 in the second.
> Temple shot nearly 70% (17-25) in the second half, finishing at 59% for the game. SMU shot just 32% in second half and overtime session to finish at 45% for the game.
> Rose ended with 25 points and now has 1,718 in his career, passing Houston's Rob Gray (1,710, 2015-19). He added eight rebounds and three blocks, which tied a career high.
> Monty Scott had his best game in Cherry and White, with a season-high 22 points, adding six assists, also a season high.
> Alani Moore II finished with 14 points and five assists, while Jake Forrester rounded out four players in double figures in scoring with 11 points.
> Josh Pierre-Louis and Damion Moore each added nine in the win.

First Half
> After Temple got the opening bucket, SMU scored nine straight points and their advantage grew to 15-6 at the first media timeout.
> Temple then used 14-6 surge to cut the SMU lead to 22-20 with just over nine minutes to play.
> SMU countered with a 22-5 run that spanned the next seven minutes, giving the Mustangs their largest lead of the game at 44-25 with three minutes to play.
> Temple closed the half on a 6-2 run, but SMU led 48-31 at the break.

Second Half
> Forrester got hot to start the second quarter, as the Owls narrowed the lead to 54-42.
> SMU built it back to 15, but Temple kept surging, as nine points from Josh Pierre-Louis keyed a 17-3 run that closed the gap to 57-54 with five minutes to play.
> The Mustangs drained a three to go up six, but the Owls kept chipping away, finally tying the game at 73-73 on a pair free throws with 2:06 left.
> After the Mustangs made it 76-73, Temple scored seven of the next eight to lead 80-77 on a Scott jumper with 25 seconds on the clock.
> SMU then forced overtime, as Tyson Jolly sank three free throws to tie it at 80-80, while Temple's game-winner rimmed out. 

Overtime
> Back and forth play opened the extra session, with SMU leading 85-84 two minutes in.
> Rose took over, with three of his 10 points in the period putting the Owls up 89-85 with 2:28 on the clock.
> SMU made it a one point game at 91-90 with three the hard way, but two free throws from Moore II gave the Owls some breathing room.
> With Temple up three, a huge defensive board from Rose put Temple in the driver's seat up two possessions with under 17 seconds to play.
> The Owls then sealed the win from the free throw line, setting the final to 97-90.
