Field Hockey Announces 2020-21 Schedule
1.23.21 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Following the postponement of the 2020 fall season by the Big East due to the COVID-19 pandemic, head coach Susan Ciufo is announcing the Temple field hockey team's highly anticipated spring 2021 schedule. The 17-game slate features 12 conference meetings and eight home contests.
"We are ecstatic to be moving forward with a spring season of competition," Ciufo said. "Our student-athletes have worked tirelessly in the extended offseason to prepare for their first game back in over a year. We are fortunate that the Big East has put together a schedule with plenty of opportunities to play. Additionally, we are looking forward to taking on some of our non-conference opponents to help aid our growth for this season and onward into the 2021 fall season. We have a great group of seasoned players paired with some game-changing freshmen and transfers who are anxious to finally take the field. We are looking forward to game one on Feb. 12!"
The Owls will host Hofstra on Feb. 12 for their first game since 2019 before opening Big East play with a two-game series at Old Dominion the following weekend. The Cherry and White will return home to host Liberty on Feb. 27 and 28, before playing a home-and-home series with Villanova to open March.
Temple gets a break from league play when it hosts Monmouth and Drexel on March 12 and 14, respectively, before opening a six-game road stretch at Delaware on March 21. Big East play resumes on March 27 when the Owls face Providence for a two-game series.
April play opens at Liberty for the final two games of the four-game series on April 3 and 4, and the team's second home-and-home with Villanova is set for April 10 in Conshohocken, Pa. and April 11 at Howarth Field to close out conference play. The regular ends with a matchup against Big 5 rival La Salle on April 18, with Senior Day activities to begin prior to the game.Â
Villanova will host the Big East Tournament, with the semifinals to take place on April 22 and the finals set for April 24. The top four teams will qualify.
The Owls saw improvement in their first season under Ciufo in 2019, with five more wins than the 2018 season and its first conference win since October 2016 with a 2OT victory at Georgetown. The team added nine newcomers to the squad in the offseason and will return seven starters from the 2019 campaign.
