Men's Basketball Rally Falls Short in 76-71 Loss to USC

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's basketball team came back from 23 down in the second half to close within three points but was not able to finish their rally in falling to visiting USC, 76-71, in a thriller at the Liacouras Center Saturday night.
Recapping the Game
First Half
> The game started as a tightly contested battle with Temple either tied or leading through the first nine minutes, but only by a mere basket.
> USC took its first lead, 15-14, on an Isaiah White layup at the 10:59 mark.
> Jake Forrester tied the game with a free throw, but the Trojans went on a 16-2 run to open a 31-17 advantage.
> Tai Strickland and Damian Dunn then combined to run off five straight to narrow the margin to single digits (31-22).
> USC would regroup and close the final four minutes on a 15-5 run, including scoring the last six points of the half to take a commanding 46-27 lead at the break.
> Fouls were the story of the frame as Temple was whistled for 15 and USC 12. Temple starter Sage Tolbert III was called for three fouls with four other Owls picking up two personals. USC had four players called for two fouls.
Second Half
>After USC built its lead up to 23 at the start of the second half, Temple used a 9-0 run over a two-minute span to cut the margin to 14, 55-41, with just under 14 minutes to play.
> Temple kept the pressure on, and after trading baskets ran off 13 straight points with the run including a nearly 30-foot three-pointer from Khalif Battle and a Strickland trey to make it 58-54 at 9:42 on the clock.
> The Trojans built the lead back to eight (64-56) on a basket by Isaiah Mobley, but Temple answered with jumpers by Zach Hicks and Jeremiah Williams to trim it back to four.
> Chevez Goodwin tallied four straight for the visitors to extend their lead back to eight with it going back and forth the final three minutes.
> The Owls closed to within a possession, 74-71 on a Battle free throw with 9.9 seconds to play, but the Trojans held on for the victory.
