Men's Basketball Falls to Clemson at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic

11.18.21 | Men's Basketball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A combination of cold-shooting by Temple (1-2) and a hot-shooting from Clemson lifted the Tigers (4-0) to a 75-58 win over the Owls in opening round play of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic Thursday evening at TD Arena.

Tai Strickland scored a career-high 16 points with Damian Dunn adding 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Owls.  Nick Honor was perfect from the field (7-7, 4-4 3pt) in tallying a game-high 19 points to pace the Tigers.

Clemson shot a sizzling 54.55 percent (30-55) from the field and 52.4 percent (11-21) from long range compared to Temple's 35.8 percent (19-53) overall and 20 percent (4-20) from deep.

Recapping the Game

First Half
  • Khalif Battle started off the game with a steal and dunk on the first possession to set the tone of what would be aggressive play by both teams.
  • Jeremiah Williams, who was questionable due to an injury suffered in the USC game, started the game, and scored four of the Owls first 10 points.
  • Honor scored 14 of his team's first 16 with his consecutive threes giving the Tigers an early 16-13 lead.
  • After Clemson extended its lead to 23-18, Strickland drained back-to-back three-pointers to put the Owls back ahead, 24-23, with just under eight minutes to play in the half.
  • The Tigers responded with a 15-2 run to close out the half, taking a 38-26 advantage into the locker room.
  • Clemson held Temple scoreless over the final 6:16 of the period, while scoring the final 10 points.
Second Half
  • Clemson picked up right where it left off. Scoring 15 of the first 18 points of the half to take a commanding 53-30 lead with 15 minutes remaining.
  • The Owls were unable to cut into the deficit as the team remained cold from the field while the Tigers continued their hot shooting.
  • Unlike the previous game against USC, Temple never was able to cut the lead below 20 points the remainder of the contest.
Statistically Speaking
  • Battle, the Owls' leading scorer entering the contest (24.0 ppg), was held to four points on two-of-seven shooting.
  • Zach Hicks did not score but led Temple with three assists.
  • Nick Jourdain had a career-high five blocks while pulling down four rebounds.
Next Up
  • Temple moves into the consolation bracket and faces Boise State Friday at noon (ESPNU/1210 AM WPHT).
