Men’s Basketball Falls to UCF in Conference Opener, 65-48

PHILADELPHIA – Temple continued its shooting woes, hitting just 27 percent from the field in falling to UCF, 65-48, in its American Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center. The Owls fall to 6-5, 0-1 AAC while the Knights improve to 7-2, 1-0. Jeremiah Williams (11 points) and Damian Dunn (10) led the Owls while Brandon Mahan topped the Knights (18).
Recapping the Game
First Half
> It was a defensive battle from the start as both teams' aggressive man-to-man defense shutting it difficult to find baskets.
> Leading 8-6 with just under 11 minutes to play, Temple would go on a mini-run, scoring eight of the next 10 points to take the largest lead of the half, 16-8, with 4:56 on the clock.
> After making just one field goal over a 10-minute stretch, UCF answered back with eight straight points over a four-minute stretch to tie the game at 16 with 1:02 left.
> Dunn gave the Owls the lead (19-16) with a three-point play before Darius Johnson concluded the scoring in the period with two free throws.
> UCF shot 19 percent for the half with Temple not faring much better (24%).
Second Half
> UCF jumped out quickly, scoring the first eight points of the half to open a 26-19 in the first minute and change.
> The Knights, who made eight of their first 11 shots after the break (three-of-three from long), stayed hot, extending the lead to 41-27 by the 11-minute mark,
> The Owls finally cut the deficit to single digits (49-40) on a steal and slam by Williams with 4:26 to play, but then the Knights made a breakaway basket and mayhem ensued.
> Temple was called for an intentional foul and then Williams was called for a technical. The Knights converted all four free throws for what amounted to a six-point play to go up 55-40.
> UCF added two more free throws on that possession to make it 57-40.
