OWL ABOUT TEMPLE
Temple continues to climb the NCAA Rankings, jumping two spots to #41 after a solid showing on the road at Pitt. The Owls top two scores of the season have come on the road in back-to-back meets, as Temple put up a 194.850 at Denver and a 194.525 at Pitt. The Owls' floor squad leads the way with a 48.895 average to rank 29 in the nation. Temple's vault squad is not far behind ranking 32nd with a 48.720.
Two Owls have landed on conference rankings in junior Julianna Roland and senior Faith Leary. Roland is eighth on vault, averaging a 9.820, while Leary sits eighth on floor with a 9.830. Temple's floor team ranks second in the EAGL, while vault stands third.
LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR: Tie at Pitt - 194.525
Temple used a historic beam rotation to overcome a large deficit and tie Pitt on the road on Sunday, 194.525 - 194.525. Trailing by nearly a point after three rotations, Temple dazzled on beam, with a season-high 49.200, led by a 9.900 from junior Ariana Castrence, to come back and tie the Panthers.
Temple trailed after the first event, counting a fall on bars, but a solid vault rotation, led by a program record 9.900 from junior Juliana Roland, closed the gap on the Panthers. Temple had a solid floor rotation, but Pitt matched it on beam, as the Owls trailed 146.100 to 145.325 heading into the final rotation.
SCOUTING #24 UNC
The top-ranked team in the EAGL, North Carolina ranks 24th in the NCAA Rankings. The Tar Heels average a 195.367 and have gone 195 in every meet this season. UNC's high scores have been spurred by an outstanding beam rotation that ranks 11th in the nation and first in the conference with a 49.033 average. The team also ranks 27th in the NCAA on bars with a 48.825.
Individually, the Tar Heels are led by Elizabeth Culton, the number one beam worker in the conference and the NCAA. She averages a 9.933 on the season, with no scores below 9.900. Culton also ranks second on bars with a 9.850. UNC's Lily Dean ranks third in the EAGL on floor with a 9.875, while Hannah Nam is fourth on beam with a 9.817.
LAST MEET FOR UNC - 195.00 at Towson Quad
The Tar Heels won a quad meet on Friday with a 195.000, topping Towson (193.925), Pittsburgh (193.700), and LIU (188.075) at Towson. UNC had the meet's top score on bars, beam, and floor.Â
Individually, Elizabeth Culton took first place in the all-around, competing all four events for the first time this season, scoring a 39.275. She also won beam with a 9.925 and floor with a 9.850, while tying for the high score on bars with a 9.850.
ROLAND VAULTS INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Junior transfer Julianna Roland needed just five meets to tie a Temple record that has stood for 25 years. The Lumberton, N.J. native scored a 9.900 on her Yurchenko full at Pitt on Feb. 14, tying Temple's school record set in 1996 by Adrienne Carver, who hit the mark twice in her career. Roland's vault was notable, as it started from a 9.950, a rule change for the full that was implemented for the start of the 2016 season.
EAGL HONORS FOR ROLAND
Julianna Roland was named the EAGL Co-Gymnast of the Week on Monday, the first Owl to ever earn that honor. She tied Temple's school record with her 9.900 on vault and wrapped up her day at Pitt with a 9.875 on beam that helped Temple to score its second-best beam rotation in school history (49.200).
BEAM QUEENS
Temple put together a record-book worth beam rotation at Pitt on February 14 that made up nearly a one point deficit on the road. Jordyn Oster led off the rotation with a 9.800 which Brooke Donabedian matched in the third spot. Renee Schugman tallied a 9.825, while Julianna Roland went higher with a 9.875. Anchoring the lineup was Ariana Castrence who's career-high 9.900 finished the Owls at 49.200, just .025 off the program record set by the team on March 23, 2019 at the ECAC Championships. Oster and Castrence also had counting scores in that record-setting rotation in 2019.
