Oerlemans Scores Twice in Loss at #6 Liberty

4.3.21 | Field Hockey

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Scoring against Liberty for the first time since 2018, junior Nienke Oerlemans posted both goals Temple field hockey's 4-2 loss at No. 6 Liberty Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Owls fall to 5-8 (2-7 BIG EAST) while the Flames improve to 11-2 (9-2 BIG EAST).

Recapping the Game
> Liberty earned five penalty corners in the first quarter, converting on the fifth in the final minute of the quarter to go up 1-0.
> Temple evened the score off a penalty corner, with Oerlemans scoring on the Owls' first shot of the game at the 25-minute mark.
> The Flames pulled ahead once again as the first half came to a close, scoring off their ninth penalty corner of the game.
> Liberty widened the lead to two coming out of the half, but the Cherry and White responded and cut the Flames' lead with Oerlemans' second of the day.
> The Flames put the game away less than 10 minutes later, scoring in the final two seconds of the game to seal the victory.

Statistically Speaking
> The Owls allowed 14 penalty corners, successfully defending a season-high 10.
> Liberty held a 27-6 shot advantage, putting just 10 on frame while Temple put all six shots on target.
>  Oerlemans fired a team-leading two shots, with four other Owls making an attempt.
> Cristina Carotenuto recorded six saves, just one shy of tying her season-high.

Quotable
> "I am impressed with the effort behind our team today. We lost our CM and one of our attackers this week, but in a season where there have been so many uncontrollable moments our team continues to rise to the occasion. While it's unfortunate to walk away with a loss, we had ladies stepping up today in positions they hadn't played before and they did a phenomenal job. Liberty is an extremely threatening team and having to defend the attack of the No. 6 team in the nation only makes us better. A major positive on our end was our ability to score twice on Liberty. We're hungry and looking forward to tomorrow's game." – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo
