Champions: Men's Crew Wins First-Ever Points Trophy; Varsity Eight Remains Unbeaten
5.8.21 | Men's Crew
PHILADELPHIA - After a year away from the water, Temple Men's Crew made history Saturday on the Schuylkill, winning its first-ever Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta's Men's Points Trophy. The Owls earned six medals, including three gold, in its nine entries to secure the title.
Team Effort
> Graduate student Alex DeNolfo, racing for the first time all season, started things off with a fourth place finish in the men's collegiate single. Â
> Then it was the men's freshman/novice four with freshman Patrick Rogers stroking the Owls' to a bronze medal. The race came down to the wire with Fairfield winning by 1.46 seconds over Mercyhurst with Temple missing silver by just .06 seconds.
> The Owls freshman/novice eight, stroked by freshman Nick Guidara, then won the team's first race of the day, beating Drexel by 2.5 seconds for the gold medal.Â
> Temple's JV four, stroked by freshman Brandon Hefele, picked up a point for the Owls with a sixth place finish.
> Next was the third varsity eight with sophomore stroke Trent Tighelaar leading the boat to a fourth place showing.
> The second varsity eight, with Samuel DiGiacomo at stroke, earned a bronze medal, finishing behind George Washington and Drexel.
> Temple's second gold was earned by the Owls lightweight four. Stroked by Michael Glynn, the crew easily won in open water.Â
> The Owls lightweight eight, with Kristopher Fisher at stroke, picked up a silver medal, finishing behind Mercyhurst.
> In the final men's event, senior Lasse Grimmer stroked the 10th-ranked and unbeaten Owls' varsity eight to a gold medal, and record 22nd title in the event. Temple edged George Washington by a mere 1.096 seconds in its closest challenge of the season.
Quotable: Head Coach Brian Perkins
> "I am just super proud of the guys. In 2018, we won a couple of events but did not win the points trophy. In 2019, every single rower made it into the finals, but did not earn enough points. This time everyone again made it into the finals and we earned enough points to win our first points trophy. Â
This is a good starting off point for the IRA Championships at the end of the month."
> "It was our closest race of the year. We were behind for most of it against our city rival (Drexel), but we found our rhythm and got a culture win for the program."Â
Up Next
> Temple has three weeks off to prepare for the IRA National Championship, being held at Mercer, N.J. on May 28-29.
