Gymnastics Travels to New Hampshire for Tri-Meet versus UNH and Penn

1.21.22 | Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's gymnastics team hits the road for the second straight weekend as it travels to the University of New Hampshire for a last-minute tri-meet with UNH Wildcats and the Penn Quakers at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham.

Temple and UNH were slated for a 2 p.m. dual on Sunday, but the two teams added Penn to make it a tri-meet on Thursday morning after the Quakers' Saturday dual meet at William & Mary was canceled.

LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR
The Temple Owls gymnastics team knocked off, then-No. 23 Iowa State by the score of 194.525-194.075 last Saturday at Hy-Vee Hall during the Chows Winter Classic. The win marked the first time the Owls have beaten a Big 12 opponent in program history.

The Owls had the top team marks on two of the four events, including floor and beam, with scores of 48.725 and 48.400, respectively.

Sarah Stallings made her Owls debut during Saturday's Chows Winter Classic and earned a piece of first place on the bars as she tied with Logan Basuel of Iowa State with a score of 9.8, tying her for the seventh-best average in the EAGL this season.

Freshman Hannah Stallings picked up her second straight all-around victory, defeating Hannah Loyim of Iowa State, 38.875-38.250.

Freshman Madison Dorunda finished with a career-high 9.775 on beam. It was a .950 improvement from a week earlier at the Keystone Classic where she scored 8.825.

Sophomore Brooke Donabedian improved from last weekend's performance on the floor with a team season-high and personal best 9.825, taking third overall.

Senior Julianna Roland tied for second-place overall on the vault as she earned a season-high 9.8.

Including Roland, four of the six Owls gymnasts scored 9.7 or better on the vault.

Five of the six Owls competing on the bars would earn at least 9.7, including Sarah Stallings with the team-high 9.8.

Sophomore Cyrena Whalen and senior Ariana Castrence added a season-high with a 9.75. Junior Madison Brooks added a 9.725, while Hannah Stallings rounded out the scoring with a 9.7.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
The University of New Hampshire is still looking for its first win of the season after opening with a loss to Towson on Jan. 9 and then coming up short against three Power 5 schools; NC State, North Carolina, and Rutgers at last weekend's Rutgers Quad Meet. The Wildcats finished the Rutgers Quad Meet in fourth place with a score of 193.625, an improvement of 1.37 from the opening week versus Towson.

On the beam last weekend, Alyssa Worthington tallied a career-high 9.925  to secure first place in the event. Freshman Gracy Mowers led the 'Cats on the floor with a personal-best 9.850 to earn a share of third place. Junior Kylie Gorgenyi scored a 9.875 for second place on the vault. In addition, Gorgenyi tied for fourth place on bars with a score of 9.875.

The Wildcats are well represented in the top 10 of the EAGL event rankings. Worthington sits atop of the beam rankings, averaging 9.9 each time out, while Hailey Lui is ranked sixth, averaging a 9.838. Gorgenyi is third in the conference rankings on the vault, averaging a 9.838. In addition, she averages 9.8, ranking tied for seventh.

SCOUTING THE QUAKERS
The Owls faced Penn just two weekends ago at home in McGonigle Hall, where they finished the Keystone Classic 0-2 against Temple and Penn State. Since then, they picked up their first victories of the season as they registered a 194.250, the second-best overall team score in program history and edged out the host George Washington, William and Mary, and Cornell at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational.

Kristen Kuhn had the highest mark on the bars at 9.875 at GWU and is ranked first in the Gymnastics East Conference with the same score. Natalie Yang earned the victory on the beam last weekend with a 9.875

On the vault, Penn has six gymnasts in the top 10 of the GEC. Isabel Song and Kierstin Belkoff are tied for third with a 9.750, Sydney Kraez averages a 9.712 for sixth, and the trio of Olivia VanHorn, Emma Davies, and Rose Debarberie are tied for 10th in the GEC with a 9.675.
