Gymnastics Squares Off With No. 26 UNC in Dual Meet

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple gymnastics team travels to Chapel Hill to face off with the No. 26 Tarheels at Carmichael Arena on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. ET. This weekend's dual will mark their final road meet of five consecutive before returning to McGonigle Hall on Friday, Feb. 18, for the annual Pink Meet.

ONE TOUCH WARMUP
Temple will be on the road for the final away meet of five consecutive weekend trips as they travel to North Carolina to take on the Tarheels at Carmichael Arena. The consecutive weekend trips started in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Chows Winter Classic on Jan. 15 and will conclude at North Carolina on Feb. 12.

The Owls added a pair of wins last weekend at the Towson Quad Meet as they defeated Eastern Michigan and LIU but fell to the host Towson. The Cherry and White scored a 194.650, while Towson finished with a first-place score of 196.700, Eastern Michigan earned 194.575, finished third, and LIU rounded out the four-team competition with a 193.350.

Julianna Roland was team leader in the final two rotations at Towson, putting together 9.9 scores, one of which came on the vault, marking the fourth time she's achieved the program record in her two seasons with the Owls.

The Cherry and White tied two team program records with a 49.375 on floor and 49.150 on vault.
On floor, all six gymnasts would earn at least a 9.8. Including a 9.9 from Roland, and 9.875's from Renee Schugman, Tori Edwards, and Faith Leary.

On the vault, five of the gymnasts scored at least a 9.775. Roland, and teammates Ariana Castrence and Anna Hill all put together their best vaults of the season.

Temple goes into this weekend's tri-meet with a 5-24 all-time record against the Tarheels.

The Owls have an average team score of 194.850, good for No. 41 in the country. North Carolina comes in No. 26 with an average of 195.545.

Bars
The Owls started on bars and put together a 48.475 but trailed Towson by .775 points which began on vault. Three of the six Temple gymnasts scored 9.7's or better, including team leader Ariana Castrence's team-high 9.775. Sisters Hannah and Sarah Stallings scored a pair of 9.7's. Madison Brooks and Cyrena Whalen also had matching scores of 9.650.
Beam
The Cherry and White had their lowest beam score of the season with a 47.650. The beam struggles put Temple behind by 2.150 points and in fourth place after the second rotation. Sophomore Renee Schugman led off for the Owls on the apparatus and had a team-high 9.775. Freshman Summer Ruskey matched her career-high score of 9.725 from last weekend's dual meet at LIU.

The Owls began their ascent up the scorecard in the third rotation as they tied the school record with a 49.375. Each of the six Temple gymnasts scored at least a 9.825 during the rotation. Senior Julianna Roland matched her career-high for the sixth time as she put together a 9.9 floor score, earning second place Graduate students Tori Edwards and Faith Leary, and Schugman tied for third place with 9.875's. Schugman tied a personal best as she led off for the Cherry and White. In addition, sophomore Brooke Donabedian and Hannah Stallings added a 9.850 and 9.825, respectively.

TU closed out the night on a high as it tied the program record on the vault with a 49.150. Roland added her second 9.9 of the evening, giving her a first-place finish, and the second of the season on the apparatus. Freshman Anna Hill reset her career-best on vault with a 9.825. Castrence tied for second place on the vault with a 9.875, the 18th time in her career with a 9.8 or better.

Temple ranks fifth of the eight EAGL teams, averaging 194.850 in five meets.

The strongest event by far this season for the Temple Owls has been the floor exercise where they have averaged a 48.990, best in the EAGL. Last week at the Towson Quad Meet, the Cherry and White tied the school record on the floor with a 49.375. The Owls have four gymnasts ranked within the top 15 of the conference, including sophomore Brooke Donabedian averaging a 9.820 and ranked fourth. Graduate student Tori Edwards is ranked seventh in the conference with a 9.815 average. In her last three meets, Edwards has scored a 9.875 in each of her routines. Fellow graduate student sits in 10th, tied with three others, averaging 9.8. All-arounder, freshman Hannah Stallings is next on the list, ranked 14th in the league with a 9.795 average. Together as a team, the Owls have knocked out 25 9.7 or better scores so far this season.

Speaking of Stallings, the freshman is ranked fifth in the EAGL with a 38.930 in the all-around. The Raleigh, N.C. native has competed in five straight all-around competitions, while earning the victory in each. Stallings 39.250 at the LIU Dual Meet tied her for fifth-best score in school history, tying her with teammate Ariana Castrence's mark from 2020. She also tied Castrence's mark in her third meet of the season with the third-highest score in school history with a 39.275. On Jan. 23, Stallings also became one of three gymnasts in program history to record the highest score (9.9) in a vault routine.

Over on the vault, the team ranks second in the EAGL with a 48.900. Just last week at the Towson Quad Meet, the Cherry and White tied the school record on the vault with a 49.150. The last time out, the Tarheels split a tri-meet at No. 9 Alabama and No. 17. Against the Crimson Tide, the heels fell 195.325-197.875 but did pick up the win versus Broncos, 195.325-194.875.

Since 2000, UNC and Alabama have faced off in a meet five times, and the Feb. 4 tri-meet saw the Tar Heels earn its best score ever against the Tide.
