Men’s Basketball Travels to Memphis for Key AAC Matchup Thursday

2.23.22 | Men's Basketball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Temple (15-9, 8-5 AAC) travels to Memphis (15-9, 9-5 AAC) Thursday night (7 pm ET/ESPN2/1210 AM WPHT) for a key American Athletic Conference contest that will go a long way in terms of conference standings.

The Owls are currently in sole possession of fifth place with the top five teams in the standings receiving a first-round bye in the Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship (Mar. 10-13).  Memphis is one-half game ahead of Temple and tied with Tulane for third in The American.

This is the only meeting between Memphis and Temple this season.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Temple has posted consecutive impressive wins, first a come-from-behind 64-57 win over then AAC-leader SMU on Feb. 16 at home before knocking off Cincinnati on the road, 75-71, on Feb. 20.
> Damian Dunn, who leads the Owls in scoring (15.5 ppg/6th AAC) and free throw percentage (102-122, .836/5th AAC), returned to the lineup against Cincinnati after missing the previous two games with an ankle injury.  He picked up where he left off with a 15-point performance.
> Jeremiah Williams, who left the USF game with a right shoulder injury and missed the last three games, is second on the team in scoring (9.8 ppg) and runs the show offensively. Questionable for Memphis, he leads the Owls in assists (4.4 apg, 4th AAC), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.00/4tfth AAC), and steals (29).
> Tai Strickland, who was named to AAC Player of the Week on Monday, is averaging 8.4 ppg (3rd on team). He exploded for a career-high 27 points in the SMU win and tallied 11 points in his first collegiate start at Cincinnati.
> Nick Jourdain (7.3 ppg), who scored a career-high 23 at Tulsa, leads TU in blocks (1.8 bpg/2nd AAC), and offensive rebounding (2.6 pg/2nd AAC) while is second in overall rebounding (5.6 rpg/13th AAC).
> Another recent starter making noise is Jahlil White (6.7 ppg). White, who posted his first career double-double (11 pts, 10 rebs) at Tulsa, leads the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg/12th AAC) and has grabbed 10 or more rebounds three times.
> Zach Hicks (7.5 ppg), who set a school record with 10 threes vs. Delaware State, leads the Owls with 46 three-pointers. He has been red-hot of late from deep, making 40 of his treys over the last 13 games.
> Hysier Miller, who joined the starting lineup at Tulane, set new marks in minutes (40) and assists (8) against the Green Wave and points (13) at Cincinnati

SCOUTING MEMPHIS
> Memphis had its six-game win streak snapped at SMU on Sunday.
> 6-11, 250-pound freshman center Jalen Duren leads the way for the Tigers.  The preseason all-AAC first-team selection tops a balanced Memphis attack in scoring (11.4 ppg) and the conference in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and blocked shots (2.3 bpg).  His 64.4 shooting percentage would top the league but he has not made the minimum makes (five per game).
> De'Andre Williams (10.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and Emoni Bates (10.4 ppg), who has missed the last five games, are the only other Tigers to average double figures.
> Landers Nolley II (9.8 ppg), Lester Quinones (9.6 ppg) and Tyler Harris (9.5 ppg) have accounted for 109 threes to lead the Memphis perimeter attack while Alex Lomax (6.0 ppg, 73 assists) directs the offense.
> Memphis leads the conference in field goal percentage (.470), assists (16.2), steals (8.5)  and blocks (6.0) per game while ranking second in scoring (76.0 ppg).

SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and Memphis are meeting for the 23rd time with each team winning 11 times.
> The Owls have won four of the last seven, falling 79-65 in the most recent meeting at Memphis on Feb. 5, 2020.
> Temple has had success playing at Memphis, posting a 4-5 overall record there including 2-3 while members of the AAC.
> Two of the three conference losses at the FedEx Forum were by three points or less with one of those going to overtime.
> Both scheduled meetings between Temple and Memphis were canceled last season due to Covid.
