Kinzel, Kopec, Neilson Named Senior Nexus Championship Selections
6.16.22 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Three Owls have been named Senior Nexus Championship selections, as announced by USA Field Hockey Thursday afternoon. Current athletes Devin Kinzel and Julianne Kopec have been tabbed, as well as incoming freshman Lina Neilson.
Kinzel and Kopec had explosive debuts in Cherry and White, with both playing in all 19 games. Kopec led the team in goals with six, three of which were game-winners to tie for third in the league, while Kinzel tied for second with three. Kopec scored the game-winner over No. 20 UConn to clinch the team's berth to the BIG EAST Tournament, marking the first time the team has defeated UConn since 1989 and the first time the team has defeated a ranked opponent since 2016. Kinzel fired four shots, putting all on frame, and was one of just four Owls to record a defensive save.
Neilson was a four-year letter winner at Lenape High School in Medford, New Jersey and in February was named to the US Rise Women's National Team for the second-straight year. Neilson is a fixture in the USA Field Hockey system, being named to the U16 National Team before her stints on the US Rise Women's National Team.
Formerly known as the Young Women's National Championship, the Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes. During the spring and early summer, athletes trialed and trained at one of the seven USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers throughout the country for an opportunity to be selected to the Senior NXC, a step along the Olympic Development Pathway program. All athletes that were previously on the Rise, U-21, Development and Senior U.S. Women's National Team were also included within the selection.
The Senior NXC, presented by Osaka Hockey, will take place July 17 to 22 at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The event will start with a team training session on Sunday, July 17 with games starting on Monday, July 18. The opportunity to be selected for the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team and Junior USWNT Selection Camps are at stake.
