7.11.22 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Head field hockey coach Michelle Vittese has announced the team's 2022 schedule, highlighted by 11 home games, three Big 5 rivals, and one ACC opponent.Â
The Owls will open the 2022 campaign with a pair of exhibition matches, getting a tuneup at Delaware (8/19) and against Monmouth (8/21). The regular season begins at Lafayette on Aug. 26 before the home opener Lehigh on Aug. 28. The Cherry and White will then head to Virginia for a pair of road games, facing Vittese's alma mater Virginia (9/2) and Longwood (9/4).Â
Temple will return home to host LIU on Sept. 9 before traveling to Lewisburg, Pa. to face Bucknell (9/11). The team will open BIG EAST play at home against Quinnipiac on Sept. 16 and open a three-game Big 5 stretch against La Salle on Sept. 18. The Owls will continue league play against Villanova on Sept 23 and host Penn (9/25) to open a four-game homestand.Â
BIG EAST play resumes at Howarth Field on Sept. 30 with Georgetown before cross-town rival Drexel opens October play on Oct. 2. Temple will close its homestand against Providence (10/7), making the trip back to Virginia to face reigning BIG EAST champion Liberty on Oct. 14.Â
The Cherry and White will play three of its next four games at home, hosting Brown (10/16) and Old Dominion (10/21) before closing out the road schedule and league play at UConn on Oct. 28. The Owls will return home on Oct. 30 to face Lock Haven in the regular-season finale.
Temple went 8-11 (4-3 BIG EAST) in 2021, its first year under Vittese, advancing to the BIG EAST Conference Tournament for the second-straight year. The Owls also defeated then-No. 20 UConn, the first time the team has defeated the Huskies since 1989 and the first time the team has defeated a ranked opponent since 2016. 2021 also marked the first time since 2015 that the Cherry and White has seen a winning season in conference play and the team's best RPI finish since 2014.
