Women’s Basketball Set to Open Season Against Delaware State

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (0-0) tips off the regular season on Monday, November 6th at Liacouras Center against the Delaware State Hornets (0-0). This will be the first of three straight home games for the Cherry & White. The game will stream on ESPN+, tickets available to purchase here.

THE OWLS (Season Preview)
> Temple returns 70% of its total scoring production from a season ago, second in the AAC behind only reigning conference champion East Carolina (83.4%).
> First Team Big 5 and Second Team All-AAC guard Aleah Nelson headlines for the Owls this season. In 2022-23, Nelson averaged 15.4 points per game and 4.1 assists per game, leading the team in both categories. In her four-year collegiate career, Nelson has scored 1,281 points and passed for 455 assists her career. She will look to be only the third player in Temple women's basketball history to score 1000 points and pass for 500 assists all time.
> Wing Tiarra East returns to North Broad for her junior season after an impressive first two years. After being named AAC All-Rookie as a freshman, East took the next step last season, placing second on the team in scoring with 12.0 ppg and a team leading 5.9 boards.
> Other returning Owls include Tarriyonna Gary (9.7 ppg, .370 3pt) and Ines Piper (3.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg). The Cherry & White have added seven newcomers including Vanderbilt transfer Demi Washington, and highly touted freshmen Jaleesa Molina and Tristen Taylor among five rookies.
SCOUTING DELAWARE STATE
> Delaware State earned a 7-19 record last season, it's best campaign since 2019-20. The Hornets were 5-9 in MEAC play to finish sixth in the eight-team league.
> Savanah Brooks is a player to watch for DSU. The guard impressed in her freshman season, averaging a team leading 10.3 points per contest while grabbing 3.9 rebounds per game, good for third on the squad. She was picked second team Preseason All-MEAC.
> Jazmone Turner is the interim head coach for Delaware State. She takes the helm after two years of E.C. Hill leading the program. Hill was an assistant under Coach Richardson at Towson from 2019-21.
SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and Delaware State have met four times on the floor, with the Cherry & White taking all four matchups.
> The two last battled to open the 2019 season. Temple took that contest by a score of 75-61 at McGonigle Hall. Temple all-time leading scorer Mia Davis put up a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
> In three of the four meetings between the two sides, the Owls have exceeded 90 points. The last time Temple scored 100 points was against the Hornets in 2015.
