Gymnastics to Close Out Regular Season at Maryland

The Owls will face No. 21 Maryland, No. 30 Towson, George Washington, and Yale

PHILADELPHIA - Temple will close out the regular season on Sunday, March 12 at the five-team Maryland Meet as the No. 21 Terrapins host No. 30 Towson, George Washington, Yale in the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md. Sunday's meet will begin at noon ET and will be available on Big Ten+.
 
ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
  • After two meets last week, Temple improved its NQS score from 194.920 to 195.230. The Owls helped themselves in those two meets with four-event scores in the 49.000 range. On the vault, Temple improved to No. 47 with a NQS of 48.300 with the help of back-to-back 49s, including a school-record 49.250 and then a 49.100. The Owls scored a season-high 49.075 on Senior Day during their bars routines, improving to No. 45 (48.995). On the beam and floor, the Owls are locked in at No. 40 NQS (48.935/49.125) on both apparatuses. Temple closed out the home portion of its schedule a 48.900 on the beam, while adding its third 49 score this season.
 
BARS
  • Sarah Stallings has been a consistent performer for Temple this season as she's currently ranked with the 11th-highest NQS (9.850) in the northeast region. Stallings has earned four wins on the bars this season including a career-best 9.900 on Feb. 19 at home in a quad meet versus NC State, GW, and Penn. 
  • Fellow Owl Cyrena Whalen is tied for 16th in the northeast with a 9.810 NQS. Just last weekend at home, Whalen scored her second 9.9 score this season with a career-high 9.925 during Senior Day on March 6.
  • Additionally, freshman Ashley Glynn has found herself in the top 20 of the northeast region with a 9.805 NQS. So far this season, Glynn has added five scores of 9.8 or better including a career-best 9.875 on Feb. 26 at LIU. 
 
BEAM
  • Sophomore Madison Dorunda earned her second beam victory of the season with a 9.825 on Sunday, March 6 during Senior Day as it marked her eighth straight score of at least a 9.8 on beam.
  • Brooke Donabedian is the Owls' leader in terms of NQS. The Maple Valley, Wash. native ranks No. 12 in the northeast region and No. 7 in the EAGL with a 9.850.  Dorunda follows behind her teammate with a NQS of 9.835 which ranks her No. 10 in the conference and No. 16 in the region.
  
VAULT
  • On March 2, freshman Charlie Behner and sophomore Anna Hill earned a share of first place on the vault as the two went back-to-back 9.900 scores.
  • Speaking of Hill, the sophomore currently is No. 20 in the northeast region with a NQS of 9.790. All-arounder Ashley Glynn leads the team on the vault with a NQS of 9.835, which ties her for No. 8 in the region.
 
FLOOR
  • The Owls picked up a 49.300 during their last meet on March 6. It was the second time this season the floor team accomplished this score and it was same meet Hill, Renee Schugman, and Donabedian all scored at least a 9.900. Hill tallied a career-high 9.900, while Schugman tied her career-best 9.925, but it was Donabedian who topped her teammates by tying her own school record 9.950. With her win, Donabedian has now added five event wins on the floor exercise this season.
  • Donabedian is No. 5 in the EAGL NQS rankings with a 9.910, while Schugman is tied for sixth with a 9.980. Both gymnasts are in the top 10 of the regional rankings with Donabedian tied for No. 3, while Schugman is No.7. Fellow floor mate Summer Ruskey is No. 15 with a 9.845 NQS in the region.
  • The floor team has the highest ranking NQS of the four events for Temple. The Cherry and White is No. 3 with a 49.125 and No. 5 in the northeast region.
 
ALL-AROUND
  • Ashley Glynn has improved throughout her five previous meets in the four facets of the all-around competition. Just last Sunday, Glynn scored a career-best 39.200. During Senior Day Meet on Sunday, Glynn tied for second on the beam with a 9.8 and finished in the top 10 of the floor event with a 9.8.
 
SCOUTING MARYLAND
  • Last weekend in Philadelphia, the Terrapins scored their second-highest road score of the year with a 196.600 and took first place. Maryland scored 49.300 on both vault and bars, setting a season high on vault.
  • Individually, Maryland gymnasts Maddie Komoroski and Emma Silberman each took home Big Ten Weekly Awards on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with Komoroski being named Co-Freshman of the Week and Silberman earning Co-Gymnast of the Week.
 
SCOUTING TOWSON
  • Before heading to College Park for the Maryland Quad Meet, the Tigers will go to Washington, D.C. to face the Terrapins, William and Mary, and George Washington for the GW Quad.
  • On March 2 meet at Temple, Stephanie Macasu earned a second-place finish with 9.900, while teammate Grace Vaillancourt finished in third place with a 9.875. The two turned improved on their performances just a few days later on March. 5 at Denver. Macasu and Vaillancourt consistency tied for first place with a 9.925, the fourth-highest score in school history.
 
 
SCOUTING YALE
  • On Wednesday, Raegan Walker added her third Gymnastics East Conference Co-Gymnast of the Week in 2023 and Gigi Sabatini was named Gymnastics East Conference Rookie of the Week.
  • On Sunday against Bridgeport and Rhode Island College, Walker won two out of the three events with a 9.725 on vault, and a career-high 9.9 on the beam. On the bars, Walker finished with the second place with a 9.75.
  • Sabatini had a great day in the all-around competition, scoring a 9.7 or higher on each event, as well as earning the all-around title with a 38.825. On vault she came in second place overall, scoring a 9.7 added another score of 9.7 from the floor.  On bars Sabatini finished in third place, scoring a 9.7.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
  • Deja Chambliss has been a consistent performer in all-around this season for the Colonials.  On Wednesday, Chambliss was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week as she finished first overall on beam with a 9.900 at Towson on Sunday. She also won the all-around title with a second-straight 39.350. The graduate student also helped George Washington to a season high on vault and beam at Towson with a pair of 9.900s on the events. In addition, Chambliss finished second overall at Towson on vault and floor with a 9.900 in each event.
UP NEXT
Temple will be in action next weekend in Durham, N.H. on Saturday, March 18 at the Whittemore Center for the 2023 EAGL Gymnastics Championships.
