Gymnastics Closes Out Regular Season with 196.250 at Maryland Meet; Finishes Third

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Just one week after earning its best score of the season and the third-best score in school history, the Temple gymnastics team followed it up by closing out the 2023 regular season at the Maryland Five-Team Meet with the fourth-best mark in school history (196.250). The Owls finished in third place on Sunday behind the host team Maryland (197.100) and Towson (196.575), but finished ahead of George Washington (195.450), and Yale (192.750).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 196.250 score gives the Owls their second score in the 196.0 range this season and marks the first time in school history they scored two 196.0s during the regular season.
  • It was the second straight meet that the Owls scored a 49-plus in three of their four events.
  • Freshman Ashley Glynn earned her second straight second-place finish in the all-around as she scored a career-high 39.250, tying her for seventh all-time in school history.
  • In total, the Cherry and White tallied 14 scores of 9.8 higher on Sunday.
  • All six gymnasts on bars scored a 9.8 or higher on their way to a season-high 49.200. 
Rotation 1 – (Beam - 48.850)
  • Sophomore Madison Dorunda earned a tie for fifth place with a 9.825, her ninth score of 9.8 or better this year.
  • Glynn finished in a tie for ninth place as she added her second straight 9.800, while giving her four 9.8 scores this season.
  • Junior Renee Schugman and graduate student Julianna Roland got the Owls started with a pair of 9.775s. 
Rotation 2 – (Floor – 49.175)
  • Temple recorded their fifth 49-plus score on the floor this season.
  • Juniors Brooke Donabedian and Schugman matched each other with 9.900s, tying for third place, and marking the fourth time this season the two Owls would match one another's score.
  • Donabedian and Schugman have now totaled 12 9.9s this season, while Donabedian has tallied seven with five straight, while Schugman has earned five, with three straight in as many meets.
  • Along with Glynn's 9.800 score, sophomore Summer Ruskey added her seventh score of 9.8 or higher this year with a 9.800.
Rotation 4 – (Vault – 49.025)
  • Each of the six gymnasts scored at least a 9.750 on vault in rotation 4.
  • Charlie Behner led the Owls with her third straight score of 9.875 or higher. The freshman Behner tied for second place on vault with a 9.875.
  • Glynn (9.825) and junior Mackenzie Aresta (9.800) also added scores in the 9.8 range. 
Rotation 5 – (Bars – 49.200)
  • Sophomore Sarah Stallings and junior Cyrena Whalen led the parliament of Owls, tying for fourth place with a 9.875.
  • Senior Madison Brooks and the freshman Glynn tied for 10th place with a 9.825, with Brooks tying her career-high.
  • Notably, sophomores Hannah Stallings and Dorunda rounded out the bars team with a pair of 9.8s.

The Temple gymnastics team will be on the road next Saturday, March 18 at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. for the 2023 EAGL Gymnastics Championships.
