Gymnastics Set for 2023 EAGL Gymnastics Championships

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple gymnastics team will be on the road at the Whittemore Center on Saturday, March 18 in Durham, N.H., looking to capture its second EAGL championship in three seasons.

The 2023 EAGL Gymnastics Championships will feature two sessions at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the Owls competing in the early session. The Owls will face George Washington, LIU, and Pitt to begin the day and  at day's end, the highest overall score among the eight teams will walk away with the league championship. Video for Saturday's competition will be free and available on the University of New Hampshire Athletics YouTube page.

ALL-CONFERENCE OWLS
  • Temple placed five gymnasts on the 2023 All-EAGL team, tallying seven selections. Freshman Ashley Glynn and junior Brooke Donabedian led the Owls team with a pair of All-EAGL honors. Glynn and Donabedian led the Owls team with a pair All-EAGL honors. In her first season with the Owls, the Hockessin, Del. native earned herself first team vault honors as well as first team in the all-around. Donabedian earned her second career first team selection on the floor and a first career second team beam selection, 
  • Junior Renee Schugman earned her first career All-EAGL honor, giving the Owls three first team selections as she joins Donabedian on the first team floor team.
  • Sophomore gymnasts Sarah Stallings and Madison Dorunda also earned their first career selections, rounding out the Owls All-EAGL selections for 2023. Both Cherry and White gymnasts earned second team selections, with Stallings on bars and Dorunda on beam. 
ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
  • After back-to-back meets of 196 scores, the Temple gymnastics team improved its NQS score from 194.920 to 195.490 over those two meets. On March 3, the Owls scored a 196.375, which ranks third-highest in school history, followed up just seven days later at Maryland with a 196.250, the fourth-highest score in school history. Those two scores made history for the Owls' program as it was the first time in school history that the Cherry and White would achieve two 196s during one regular season. In each of those two meets, Temple tallied 49s in three of the four events.
  • After week 10 of the regular season, the team's NQS vault ranking remained at No. 47, but the average improved from 48.830 to 48.905 after a 49.025 at Maryland on March 12. The Owls scored a 49.200 on the bars, giving them their highest score of the season. Additionally, the bars scored improved their NQS ranking from No. 45 to No. 44, from 48.885 to 48.940. Finally, the team's NQS ranking from the floor exercise improved from No. 40 to No. 39 after scoring a 49.175 at Maryland just last Sunday. The Owls moved up a .055 of a point from 49.125 to 49.180 after last week's performance.
BARS
  • Sarah Stallings was a consistent performer throughout the regular season for Temple. The sophomore finished the regular season with the 12th-highest NQS (9.860) in the northeast region. Stallings earned Second Team All-EAGL honors on bars as she won four times on bars this season, including a career-best 9.900 on Feb. 19 at home in a quad meet versus NC State, GW, and Penn. 
  • Fellow Owl Cyrena Whalen is tied for 15th in the northeast with a 9.840 NQS. In 2023, Whalen has scored five 9.8s or higher, including March 6's Senior Day where she scored a career-high 9.925. 
BEAM
  • Junior Brooke Donabedian and sophomore Madison Dorunda earned Second Team All-EAGL plaudits on the beam. Donabedian led the Owls all season in terms of NQS. The Maple Valley, Wash. native ranks No. 9 in the EAGL and No. 15 in northeast with a 9.850.  Dorunda follows behind her teammate with a NQS of 9.835 which ranks her No. 11 in the conference and No. 20 in the region.
  • In total, Temple has won six times on the beam in 2023 with Donabedian leading the way with two and Madison Dorunda, Julianna Roland, and Hannah Stalling each tallying one.
  • Five different Cherry and White gymnasts earned career-highs, led by 9.900 scores from Stallings and Donabedian.
VAULT
  • Freshman Ashley Glynn picked up a First Team All-EAGL selection after a season where she won two times to start the season. The Hockessin, Del. native finished No. 8 in the EAGL on the vault with a NQS of 9.840.
  • In the March 2 home quad meet, four of the six Temple gymnasts collected career-high scores, on their way to a season-best 49.250. In that meet, freshman Charlie Behner and sophomore Anna Hill earned a share of first place on the vault as the two went back-to-back 9.900 scores.  
FLOOR
  • Though juniors Brooke Donabedian and Renee Schugman anchored the Owls' floor team each time out, the duo were the catalysts for the Temple team.  The North Philly floor squad  picked up three scores of 49-plus this season, including a season-high and school record 49.400 on Feb. 19 at home.  In 2023, the duo have matched one another's score with at least a 9.900 on four occasions.  Along with Schugman and Donabedian, the only other floor competitor to score in the 9.9s this season was Anna Hill. On March 2, the freshman tallied a career-high 9.900. In that meet Schugman tied her career-best 9.925, but it was Donabedian who topped her teammates by tying her own school record 9.950. With her win, Donabedian added her fifth win this season.
  • Both Donabedian and Schugman have led the Owls all season long on floor, earning a pair of first team honors. Donabedian tied for No. 3 in the EAGL NQS rankings with a 9.915, while Schugman is seventh with  9.990. Both gymnasts are in the top 10 of the regional rankings with Donabedian tied for No. 6, while Schugman is No. 7. Fellow floor mate Summer Ruskey is No. 18 with a 9.845 NQS in the region.
  • The floor team has the highest ranking NQS of the four events for Temple. The Cherry and White is No. 3 with a 49.180 and No. 3 in the northeast region.
ALL-AROUND
  • Ashley Glynn has improved throughout her six previous meets in the four facets of the all-around competition. Just last Sunday, Glynn scored a career-best 39.250, tying Hannah Stallings from 2022 with the seventh-highest score in school history.  During the Maryland Five Team Meet on Sunday, Glynn scored 9.8s in each of the four events. 
ALL-ACADEMIC OWLS
  • For the second straight year the Owls led the conference all-academic selections.  For the calendar year of 2022, 22 Owls earned a spot on the EAGL All-Scholastic Team. The breakdown includes one graduate student, one senior, seven juniors, six sophomores, and seven freshmen. 
SCOUTING NC STATE
  • Conference NQS leader NC State comes into EAGL Championships with a 196.430 improving from its 2022 196.330.  Earlier in the week, the Wolfpack had four gymnasts earned 12 All-EAGL accolades with nine coming in the first team category. Emily Shepard led the team with four first team nods, including the bars, beam, floor, and all-around. Teammate Chlore Negrete earned three first team honors from the vault, beam, and floor.  Alexis Ortega also had multiple plaudits with a first team on bars and all-around, and a second team selection on the beam. Lauren Rutherford rounded out the team with a second team nod on the floor.
SCOUTING TOWSON
  • Towson picked up 13 All-EAGL selections for the 2023 season, which is one more than last season. The Tigers had the most All-EAGL athletes out of all the schools in the conference. Isabella Minervini and Grace Vaillancourt both were named to first team for bars and second team for floor. Polina Belanovski, Camille Vitoff, Lauren Bolen were all awarded first team for vault while Steph Macasu (bars), Clara Hong (bars), Lauren Keener (bars), Amy Stewart (floor), Paige Casper (floor) and Carmella Calafati (floor) were named to Second Team All-EAGL. 
SCOUTING UNC
  • The Tar Heels head into EAGL Championships after winning its second straight regular season EAGL Championship after going a perfect 6-0 in conference action and with the third-best NQS of 196.220. Julia Knower led the Tar Heels with four plaudits with first team honors on the floor and all-around, while adding second team selections on the vault and beam. Along with Knower, Elizabeth Culton (bars, beam) and Lali Dekanoidze (vault, bars) added a pair of first team selections. Kayla Forbes (vault) and Isabelle Schaefer (bars) rounded out the team with second team selections.
SCOUTING GW
  • All-arounder Deja Chambliss had four selections with three team honors for the second straight season. The graduate student was named First Team All-EAGL on the vault, floor and all-around, while adding a second team plaudit on the beam. Kendall Whitman followed with three selections herself. The junior earned first team plaudits on the vault and floor, while adding a second team selection on the beam. Also adding All-EAGL selections are Libby Garfoot (bars), Anneliese Silverman (beam), Rachel Katz (vault) and Sarah Zois (vault, beam). 
SCOUTING PITT
  • Hallie Cooperwheat led six Pitt gymnasts with three first team selections (bars, beam, all-around) and a second team selection on floor. Reyna Garvey and Sydney Washington added a pair of plaudits, one from the first and second team. Garvey  earned fist team honors on the beam and and a second team selection in the all-around, while Washington added a first team selection on the floor and second team from the vault. Also adding one selection was Kennedy Duke (vault), Natalia Pawlak (bars), and Nay'yarrah Winder (floor). 
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Senior Kylie Gorgenyi headlined the New Hampshire team with First Team All-EAGL plaudits on the bars, vault, and floor. Robyn Kelley and senior Alyssa Worthington earned first team selections All-EAGL First Team on the balance beam, while sophomore Alyssa Beaulieu was named to the First Team All-EAGL in the all-around for the Wildcats. 
SCOUTING LIU
  • LIU gymnasts Mara Titarsolej, Ilka Juk, Syd Morris earned 2023 All-EAGL selections on Monday. Titarsolej earned First Team All-EAGL on the bars, while Ilka Juk received that distinction on the beam. Syd Morris earned a pair of first team honors on beam and in the all-around.
