Gymnastics Returns to Action on Sunday in Nation’s Capital

PHILADELPHIA - The Owls' Gymnastics team will be on the road for the second straight weekend to start the 2024 season with a five-team meet at George Washington with Cornell, Penn, Yale and the host Colonials. The meet is slated for Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+ at the Smith Center.
 
ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
After two meets in 2024, Temple ranks No. 43 in the Road to the Nationals rankings with a 192.075. Thus far, the Owls' best event after two meets is the floor exercise with a 48.688. The other NQS national scores included Vault-48.955 (40th), Bars-47.200 (42nd), Beam-47.200 (42nd).
 
VAULT
After the first two meets of the season, the Owls used seven gymnasts, with freshmen Hannah Weklar, Amelia Budd, and junior Madison Dorunda seeing action on the apparatus for the first time in their careers. Fellow junior Summer Ruskey returned to the Owls' vault lineup for the first time since 2022.
 
The Cherry and White averaged a 48.363 throughout the first two meets to start the year. Throughout those two meets, Dorunda walked away after the weekend averaging 9.7-plus average. Notably, Dorunda added her first career victory on the vault last Sunday at West Virginia as she scored a 9.775.
 
BARS
Junior Sarah Stallings picked up where she left off last season. Stallings continued her mastery of the bars last week as she added her seventh career championship as she scored a 9.875 during Friday's Keystone Classic. The Raleigh N.C. junior's event-winning score was her 16th career 9.8 or better in her three years on North Broad. 
 
BEAM
Another first happened over on the beam last Sunday at WVU. Though she's competed as a regular in the beam lineup for the past three seasons, senior Renee Schugman never won an event championship on the apparatus. That all changed last Sunday as she scored a 9.800.
 
Overall, in the dual versus the Mountaineers, three other Owls including, Brooke Donabedian and Hannah Stallings (9.750), and Madison Dorunda (9.775) walked away with 9.7s or better. Schugman was consistent in the two competitions, averaging a 9.750.
 
FLOOR
Temple's Brooke Donabedian earned her eight-career victory on the floor last Sunday at West Virginia as she scored a 9.825, while teammates Madison Dorunda (2nd) and Payton Monk (T5th) earned a 9.7-plus during the dual.
 
Just two days before at the Keystone Classic, Temple scored a season-high 48.725. Freshman Payton Monk led the team with a 9.825, while three other gymnasts scored 9.7 or better. The Owls placed three student-athletes in the top six with Monk in second place, Donabedian in fifth, and Renee Schugman tied for sixth.
 
ALL-AROUND
Waterford, Conn. native Madison Dorunda made her first career appearance in the all-around last Friday at Penn as finished in third place, scoring a 36.250.
 
SCOUTING PENN
Penn hosted last weekend's Keystone Classic as it finished in third place, ahead of Temple with a 192.575. On vault, the Quakers scored its highest mark in program history on the apparatus to open the season with a 48.675. Kiersten Belkoff finished second on the vault with a 9.825. Penn also got third place finishes on bars from Skyelar Kerico on bars with a 9.825 and and a 9.8 from Emma Davies on the floor. 
 
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
GW returns 13 gymnasts to the 2024 roster, including four 2023 All-EAGL honorees in Kendall Whitman, who ended her junior season at NCAA Regionals posting a 9.925 on floor, Anneliese Silverman who was named to All-EAGL second team on beam with a 9.820 NQS, Rachel Katz who posted a 9.825 on vault and Sarah Zois who posted a 9.920 on vault and a 9.835 on beam.
 
SCOUTING CORNELL
Sydney Beers highlights the 21 returning Big Red gymnasts.  Beers  was a 2024 USAG Collegiate All-American in three events last season (all-around, floor, vault), compiling top 10 individual finishes in the vault (9.725) and floor (9.838) at the USAG Nationals event. Beers also claimed the Ivy Classic all-around title (38.950) and the fifth-highest score in school history on floor (9.900) at Penn last season.
 
SCOUTING YALE
Yale was selected third by the coaches in the 2024 GEC Preseason Coaches. Last year, the Bulldogs finished second at the conference championships. Sarah Wilson will return for her senior year after placing first in the all-around at the GEC Championships. Classmate Sherry Wang is another top returner for the Bulldogs, placing fourth in the vault at the 2023 USAG Collegiate Championships.
 
UP NEXT
Next up for the Owls will be the season debut in McGonigle Hall where take on Towson in a dual meet on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. ET.
