Last Time Out - Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Rice
Temple battled back from a double-digit halftime deficit, but dropped a heartbreaker 69-66 to the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
Lead At The Break
It's now 19-for-19 that the team that leads at halftime goes on to win the game. Despite the second half comeback, Temple trailed 41-28 after the first 20 minutes against Rice. TU is now 8-0 when leading at intermission and 0-11 when trailing at the break.Â
Closing In (Part I)
Hysier Miller has a handful of career milestones in his sights as the season progresses into its final third. He is five assists away from 250, seven three-pointers from 100, 24 steals from 100 and 308 points away from 1,000. With 245 career dimes, he is 144 away from cracking the career top-10 for the Owls, a mark currently held by Jim McLoughlin (1979-84) and Josh Brown (2013-18).
Closing In (Part II)
With his 15 second half points against Rice, Steve Settle III is now 25 from the 1,000 point mark in his career. The redshirt junior from Glenarden, Md. is averaging 9.3 points per game in 16 games during his first season with Temple.
Consistently Valuing The Ball
One thing Temple has done well all season long for the most part is hold on to the basketball. TU is 54th in NCAA Division I with 10.6 turnovers per game. The number has remained relatively consistent in conference play at 11.3 an outing. The Owls have less than 10 turnovers in seven games this season, including just eight each against East Carolina and Rice.Â
You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two
Temple has done its best impression of the Artful Dodger this season. With eight takeaways against Rice, Temple is averaging 7.8 steals per game. The pace would be the highest total since 2018-19 when TU came away with 8.6 an outing. It is nearly three steals a contest more than last season when Temple took the ball off opponents 5.0 times. Individually, Steve Settle III and Hysier Miller are both in the top-15 in the AAC at 1.8 and 1.5 swipes per night, respectively. Both players have recorded their personal, single-game career-high in steals this season with Settle taking away six against Wichita State and Miller grabbing five at Navy. Overall, the Owls have eight or more steals in 11 contests this year.Â
Scouting Report
South Florida enters play 11-5 overall with a 4-1 mark in the AAC and is coming off 72-68 win against Wichita State on Sunday. The Bulls are arguably the hottest team in the American, winning nine of their last 10 games, including a come-from-behind victory against then, No. 10 Memphis on January 18. The only blemish on their record since December 9 is a four-point setback against UAB.Â
During its current run of success, USF has upped its numbers in multiple areas, most notably from beyond the arc. In its first six games of the year, the team averaged 5.3 treys per game and shot 24.2 percent from distance. In the last 10, the Bulls are making 9.3 three-pointers a contest and connecting on 36.9 percent.Â
Chris Youngblood and Selton Miguel lead the offense for South Florida at 14.4 points per game, apiece. Kasean Pryor tops the team at 6.9 rebounds a contest and has upped his scoring production to net 12.2 a night. Jayden Reid has dished 63 assists.
Turnovers and free throws have been the story of the success for USF this season. The Bulls are in the top-60 nationally in turnovers forced per game at 14.4 a contest and are 20th in turnover margin at +4.0. South Florida is also in the top-35 in both free throws taken and makes, scoring 17.1 points a game at the line.Â
The line plays a big factor for South Florida the other way this season as well, ranking 13th in the AAC in fouls committed per game at 17.8 with opponents taking the second most attempts at the charity stripe per game at 20.8 against the Bulls.Â
Amir Abdur-Rahim is in his first season as his head coach at South Florida. He came to USF after four years at Kennesaw State where he led a turnaround from a 1-28 record in 2019-20 to a 26-9 mark last season and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
All-Time Series
Wednesday is the 23rd meeting all-time between Temple and South Florida with the Owls holding aÂ
15-7 series advantage. Temple leads the series 6-3 in games at the Liacouras Center.Â
Last Time Against South Florida
Jordan Riley scored a career-high 21 points and added eight rebounds, but Temple fell to the Bulls 76-68 in Tampa on January 4, 2024. Hysier Miller (17) and Shane Dezonie (10) joined Riley in double figures. Steve Settle III had nine points and nine rebounds.Â
Up Next
The Owls play the first of two games in a row on the road, starting with a contest at East Carolina on Sunday, January 28. Tipoff from Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. with the game slated to be broadcast on ESPN2.
