Opening Tip
The Temple University men's basketball team plays the first of two games in a row on the road, starting with a contest at East Carolina on Sunday, January 28. Tipoff from Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. with the game slated to be broadcast on ESPN2.
Last Time Out - Picarelli Nets Temple Best Against South Florida
Matteo Picarelli set a personal best at Temple with 23 points, but a second half rally by South Florida saw the Bulls escape with a 75-69 win against the Owls.
BY THE NUMBERS
Trey-Oh
Matteo Picarelli connected on 6-of-10 three-pointers against South Florida on Wednesday, the most in a game this season for a Temple player. He leads the Owls and is fourth in the AAC with 45 three-pointers made. His 38.1 percent connection rate from beyond the arc is eighth in the conference. Those numbers are right on his career averages as he is a 38.2 percent shooter from distance in his time combined between UMBC and Temple, going 125-of-327.
Count To Ten
Other than hitting three-pointers, one of the areas Picarelli has been best at is getting hit on attempts from beyond the arc. The senior from Milan, Italy has been fouled while shooting a triple 10 times this season. He trails only Justin Bailey of USC Upstate who has been fouled on 13 three-point attempts this season. Picarelli has made 20-of-24 (83.3 percent) of his free throws when fouled on a trey this season.Â
Winning The Turnover Battle
Temple sits 45th in NCAA Division I in turnover margin at +2.9. The impressive number comes from both holding on to the ball well at just 10.6 miscues a contest (58th) and forcing opponents to cough up the rock 13.4 times an outing (91st).Â
You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two
Temple has done its best impression of the Artful Dodger this season. With eight takeaways against South Florida, Temple is averaging 7.9 steals per game. The pace would be the highest total since 2018-19 when TU came away with 8.6 an outing. It is nearly three steals a contest more than last season when Temple took the ball off opponents 5.0 times. Individually, Steve Settle III and Hysier Miller are both in the top-15 in the AAC at 1.8 and 1.5 swipes per night, respectively. Both players have recorded their personal, single-game career-high in steals this season with Settle taking away six against Wichita State and Miller grabbing five at Navy. Overall, the Owls have eight or more steals in 12 contests this year including five of seven games in AAC competition. Â
Scouting Report
East Carolina is 10-10 on the season and 3-4 in the AAC following a 54-52 win against Wichita State on Sunday in one of its best defensive efforts of the year. The Pirates were picked fifth in the preseason coaches poll.Â
Leading the offense for East Carolina is RJ Felton at 15.8 points per game. Also in double figures are Brandon Johnson and Ezra Ausar who are each tallying 13.9 an outing. Ausar in particular has stepped up in conference play, averaging 14.1 a contest in AAC games. Johnson tops the team and is third in the conference at 9.2 rebounds a night and has seven double-doubles on the season. Bobby Pettiford, Jr. has dished 74 assists.
ECU has done a good job of getting second chance opportunities with 12.3 offensive rebounds a contest, ranking 43rd nationally. It has also held opponents down from beyond the arc, as teams are shooting just 30.3 percent from three-point range, a mark that also ranks inside the top-50.Â
For as much as they get their own second chance looks, the Pirates give up their fair share as well, sitting in the bottom-40 nationally at 23.3 defensive rebounds per game. They are also reliant on their starting lineup as ECU is 342nd out of 351 teams in Division I in bench scoring, getting just 12.2 points a contest from their reserves.
Michael Schwartz is in his second season leading East Carolina with a record of 26-27 in Greenville. It is his first stint as a collegiate head coach following assistant coaching stops at Tennessee, Tulsa, Fresno State and Miami.
All-Time Series
Sunday is the 17th meeting all-time between Temple and East Carolina with the Owls holding an 11-5 advantage. The Owls are 4-3 in games in Greenville.Â
