Opening Tip
Temple returns to the friendly confines of the Liacouras Center for the first time in more than a month when it hosts Wichita State on Sunday, January 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast nationally on ESPNU. Elliott-Lewis is game sponsor.
Last Time Out - Owls and Bulls Battle to Final Whistle
In a game where the final score was not indicative of how close the game was, a late-game comeback by Temple came up shy as the Owls dropped their AAC opener, 76-68 to the South Florida Bulls on Thursday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
Get Ahead Early
The trend of whoever leads at halftime wins the game continued on Thursday against USF. Temple is now 7-0 when leading at intermission and 0-7 when trailing at the break.
Going To The Line For Three
It happened again! Often times a player getting fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer is a couple of times a season occurrence. TU has all but made it a part of the offense this season with eight such opportunities in 14 games including against South Florida on Thursday. Matteo Picarelli has been the beneficiary seven times and Hysier Miller once. Temple has made 16-of-20 (80.0 percent) of its free throws when fouled on a trey.
End Of The Road
Thursday's game at South Florida was the last leg of a 32-day stretch between home games for TU. After playing Bloomsburg on December 6, the Owls played two true road games and four neutral site contests prior to play Wichita State at home on January 7.
Making The Most
As we've heard coach Adam Fisher say, you earn your minutes on in games by how you play in practice. Shane Dezonie has taken that to heart and Temple is enjoying the benefits. In his last four games, the junior from Pocono Mountains, Pa. is averaging 22.7 minutes per game, tallying 9.0 points in the span. He is also shooting 52 percent (13-for-25) from the field and 50 percent (7-for-14) from beyond the arc.Â
Starting It Off
Jordan Riley has made the most of his opportunities as a starter this season as he has scored in double figures each of the seven times he has been in the lineup. In his starts, he has averaged 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, shooting 48.7 perfect from the floor. He netted a career-high 21 against South Florida in his last game.
Shooting Their Shot
Temple enters Sunday's game 17th in the nation in three-point attempts, averaging 28.5 a contest. The Owls tied a program record when they took 38 against Old Dominion on December 22.
Scouting Report
Wichita State is 8-6 on the season and is coming off a 74-62 loss in their AAC opener against North Texas. The Shockers were selected eighth in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll.Â
Leading the offense for Wichita State is Colby Rogers at 16.4 points per game. He is followed by Xavier Bell and Kenny Pohto in double figures at 13.4 and 11.1 a night, respectively. Pohto tops the team with 7.5 rebounds a contest. Harlond Beverly has dished 46 assists.Â
The Shockers have done a very good job this season of limiting second chance opportunities as they are in the top-15 nationally in both defensive rebounding at 29.8 and total boards at 42.5 a night. They have also limited opponents in multiple facets of the offensive end, ranking in the top-60 in three-point percentage defense and in the top-75 in NCAA Division I in blocks per game.Â
For all the defense they have played well, Wichita State has not made the opposition give the ball away, ranking in the bottom-20 nationally in turnovers forced at less than 10 an outing. It has also not shot very well beyond the arc, connecting on just 30.8 percent from distance and making 6.4 treys a night.Â
Paul Mills is in his first season as the head coach of the Shockers. Prior to coming to the Sunflower State, he spent six seasons as the head coach at Oral Roberts where he went 106-84, including a 30-5 mark last season, two trips to the NCAA Tournament and a Cinderella run to the Sweet 16 as a 15-seed in 2021.Â
All-Time Series
Sunday is the 13th all-time meeting between the Owls and Shockers with the series tied at 6-6. Temple is looking for its first win against WSU since it downed No. 16 Wichita State 65-53 on January 15, 2020.Â
Last Time Against Wichita State
Hysier Miller led the Owls with 17 points and four assists, but a 13-2 Shockers run to end the firt half propelled Wichita State to a 79-65 win at the Liacouras Center on February 16, 2023.Â
Out Of Conference Experience
Temple finished its non-conference schedule 7-6. It is the sixth time in the last seven seasons the Owls have finished with a winning record in a full season outside of AAC play.Â
Half A Dozen
Temple has placed five players with 10 or more points in a game four times this year, but December 6 against Bloomsburg was the second time this season the Owls placed six players in double figure scoring. TU also accomplished the feat against La Salle. They are the first such games since February 7, 2018 when Quinton Rose (23), Josh Brown (17), Shizz Alston, Jr. (14), J.P. Moorman II (11), Ernest Aflakpui (10) and Nate Pierre-Louis (10) all tallied 10 or more in a 90-73 win against East Carolina.Â
Putting In Extra Work
By going to triple overtime, the game against La Salle on November 29 entered some rare territory. It was the first 3OT game for the Owls since an 83-82 win at Massachusetts on February 11, 1990. The game was also just the fifth triple overtime game in Big 5 history and the first since La Salle downed Villanova, 84-83 on December 20, 1980.Â
Up Next
The Owls play their second straight game at home when they host the East Carolina Pirates on Wednesday, January 10. Tipoff from the Liacouras Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
